I am considering purchasing a Wain - Roy backhoe. Its a model 3500D, Serial # 1235, does anyone know how old this baby is? It runs good but needs brakes and a few hoses, I can get her for $3000.
Can you still get parts?
Does this have the type of diesel that is "basically a converted gas engine" that can be hard to start in the cold mentioned in another post? I can e mail pics to anyone interested.
My main use is to clear my driveway afetr heavy snows so this is important to me?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry if your seeing this twice but I did'nt know where to put it.

Thanks
Merry Christmas
Joe

Yup, it"s a converted gas engine and hard to start
in the cold weather. I put a tank type heater on
mine, 1500 watts, and it"s ready to go after 1 to
2 hours on cold days. Based on the serial number
I would say it was built 1964-66. Excellent rig
for digging and good for loader work with the two
pedal drive system. Parts will take some hunting
but since most are Ford components should be easy
to get common items. Pins, bushings, hydraulics,
brakes all can be found or made. If it runs good
and only needs brakes and a few hoses the price
sounds real good to me even though it"s an old
machine. They were well built and far advanced to
anything on the market at that time. What area are
you from, most were sold in the Northeast.

Thanks for the info, just what I needed.

I guess I"m a bit apprehensive now since the most critical issue for me will be clearing my driveway after heavy snows. A bit of messing around to start it otherwise would not be an issue but when your snowed in its a different story. I think my plan will be to go there when its real cold and see if I can get it to fire up.

I"m from Colorado, the present owner was surprised it made its way here too since as you said it was made in MA.

Can you tell me what a "tank type heater" is?
Also it seems that the glow plugs are disocnnected now, the wires are missing, do you think I could find or rig a replacement?

Reply part 2,

So with your tank heater you do manage to fire it up in single digit temps?
