I bougt a non runnin JD 60, engine would turn over this late fall, but it has now frozen, there must be some water in it. I know it is not rusted, becuase when I warm it up, it thaws and will turn but then when freezes it will not turn.
What can I put in the cylinders to keep it from frezing until I can run the engine? How about alcohol or ATF ???

Just guessing from the little information supplied. Might it possibly be water in the transmission which is freezing?

Of course! - unless the clutch is disengaged and free. Engine drives clutch, drives gearbox input shaft, drives layshaft..... which if frozen, won"t turn? The gearbox is just there to transmit power from the box in the appropriate ratio selected. Try and select a gear with the clutch engaged, with engine running on any manual box - you will notice a lot of noise from rotating gears grinding against stationary gears.

If its going to sit much if any yes ATF would be good. Turn it over a few times with the plugs out to help clear any water out of the cylinders and also do as Mike has said. Fill the cylinders, that way condensation can not put water in.

ATF won't hurt anything. Thaw it out and loosen your engine oil drain plug and drain off the water. Water tends to collect in there when sitting and can freeze in the oil pump.
