I"m looking for something that will remove notable rust on steel without hurting painted surfaces. It doesn"t have to remove 100% of it, just clean it up a bit. Trans fluid? Thanks

White vinegar will do the trick. May have to leave it soaking for a few days depending on how deep the rust is though.

depends on how big an object you want the rust off of and the paint to say on ?? Electrolic derusting is easy and free. If the Item is small enought to fit into say a 55 gal barrel I would use this method. It works for me.

I think the stuff is called Ospho... ask for it at Ace hardware. It's phosphiric acid and it's about 10 bucks per gallon... (or maybe $25) I forget, but it will go along way...
