I destroyed the right cyl head on my truck(pls dont ask how long story). My question is how important is it that I replace both sides now that I have the engine apart. My son the"mechanic" says that this should be done. The truck has 80,000 on it and I only use it to plow driveway and a few chores around the ranch here.It ran fine before I ruined the head.I really dont have the time and money to do the other side.So what are the pros and cons here.

Thanks Stan

all i have ever done and heard of done was that BOTH heads need to be pulled and new gaskets installed. just make sure everything is ok on the "good" side before putting it all back together. always do both heads at the same time regardless of what happened to one.

Since you have one head off and with 80000 miles I would pull the other head and have the valves ground and guides checked that way you will know it will be set for another 80000 miles.

With only 80K on a good running engine,if it ain't broke, don't fix it. One caution, did the destruction of the other head involve any broken pistons or valves ? It's amazing how broken parts from one cylinder bank will find their way through the intake manifold and into the intake ports on the other side and do damage over there.

You don't need to replace both heads. I would pull the other head and make sure there is no damage to that head and replace the head gasket since the gasket set you'll buy has 2 head gaskets in it.

Ok heres the story about the destroyed head. When I bought the truck 11 yrs ago( its an 89)I was changing the plugs and on one of them the threads broke in the head.No problem just get an easy out(yeah right).Well that broke off in there too.So after I commenced to throwing every wrench I own across the yard(just a couple really)my buddy said calm down Ill call my friend. He comes over and ask for my torch, unplugs the coil wire and tells me to get on the ignition key.He begins to heat the easy out and plug threads and when they get molten tells me to hit the key and the compression blows out the steel.Ten minutes later he runs a thread chaser through it and Im good to go(praise god).Well here we are 11 yrs later.Ive been breakin plugs free and retightening every year and adding antisieze.Didnt do it last year and same thing happened last week, plug and easy out broke again. No problem, get my torch, wifes on the key and away we go.Well I guess there was a little more skill level operating that torch under these conditions.I destroyed the head.
So thats the story
I really dont want to pull the other head even to just change the gasket, the outter head bolts are a nightmare, heads are rusted from 3/4 down to pounding a 16 mil. on them.If I shear one of them Im really in trouble.
Well thats it guys ,thanks for the input.
Stan

Depends on what you mean by "destroyed the head".
Possible it only needs machining and fit a helicoil?

Since you don't have a ton of miles on the engine, and the damage was not from overheating, or foreign objects banging around in the engine, there's certainly no reason you HAVE to pull both heads, if you do not want to.

Save the spare head gasket, and if you have problems again with either head, you'll just need to buy an intake set to do that job.

I don't believe the older heads will fit, as intake port changes were made along with the switch to EFI.

Get casting numbers from the seller, and search Google for Ford casting number decoders. I know of a good one for GM (Mortec), but haven't needed one for Ford, but I'll bet you can find one with a little searching.
