Hello everyone, been awhile since I`ve posted anything, just thought this was noteworthy.
Went to the kid`s elem school program yesterday.
I have a 1st and 2nd grader. With all the talk of Merry Christmas vs Happy Holidays, and Christmas tree vs memorial tree or whatever, I was prepared for a politically correct program, especially at a public school. Boy was I suprised. The kids sang everthing from "Joy to the World" to "Silent Night", the parents were even invited to sing with. I guess that`s why I live in a rural area. Kinda makes you proud to see teachers and an admin that don`t buckle to the PC crowd. Have a great day Brokenwrench

I was very plesently suprised at my daughter's county chorus concert a week ago. Seven school districts participated and the majority of the music was in fact Christmas music of praise for the season and the birth of our holy one. No doubt the pc people will eventually awaken.

Great post Brokenwrench! I too went to my Kindergardener's Christmas program yesterday morning, off of graveyards no less. He had a speaking part for his class and we were instructed by his teacher to have hime say what "Christmas means to me", Out of about 5-6 kids that did the same thing 75% of them said something like, "Christmas is Jesus' Birthday" or Jeses is the Reason for the Season." My little one said that "Christmas is Jesus' Birthday" and told how he helps his Mom Bake a birthday cake for Jesus every year. Small town America is still Christian, Thank God and God Bless America and Merry Christmas to ALL.

That is great news. I remember the time I upset lots of folks at my church when spoke against use of "Rudolph The Red-nosed Reindeer" in the church pageant. Rudolph is not what it is about.

Our kids have grown and moved away and only one grand child to young for programs, but we are the "grandma" and "grandpa" for all the neighbor kids and to be specially ask to go to their programs is the most wounderous christmas gift we could recieve.Grandpa does everything from fixing bikes to helping the youngsters understand their parents at times. They are a true blessing.May you all enjoy life and remember the reason for the season!

Here in the last conservative outpost in western Washington, the high school Christmas music program includes many religious carols, and the highlight (and grand finale) is the high school choir singing the Hallelujah Chorus from the Messiah, joined by alumni and anyone else who can sing it. I asked the music teacher how they get away with it, and he said "We're just going to keep doing it until someone makes us stop." And so far, no one has. This in the same town that has a manger scene on the front lawn of city hall every Christmas. One of many good reasons to live here.

I heard on the radio the other day that they made some kid out east sing a politically correct version of Silent Night. What I can't figure out is why they didn't just sing a different song? Deck the Halls can't offend anyone, can it?

That's because the thought of finding three wise men together out east is just such a foreign concept that they just automatically assume it must be made up. Harley

If you think about it....only about 10-20% of the population is the atheist, ACLU types and the other 80% of us should be able to crush their opinions with our theology. But we are too wimpy when it comes to standing up for the truth. I went to my kids Christmas program last friday. It is a Christian school and the pastor said, I dont care about being polically correct..."MERRY CHRISTMAS"

Well, ya gotta keep in mind what the demographics are in the particular school.

You mentioned yours is a Christian school. There's absolutely NO reason to be "politically correct" in a Christian school. Christian schools are going to be overwelmingly Christian, and are private schools. A Christian school can celebrate Christmas as many times a year as it wants to.

Now in PUBLIC school, it depends on who the public is! If your public school is overwhelming populated with Christians, and especially if it's in a rural environment where most familys have been there about forever and are comfortable with each other, you're going to have few if any problems with Christmas celebrations.

I teach in a pretty large suburban district. We have pretty close to 11,000 students K-12. The middle school I'm in has over 1000 students. I don't know the religious breakdown, but I'd guess the school is probably 60-70% Christian. We don't have Christmas decorations. We don't mak a big deal out of it, either! There is a tree in the lobby, and it's decorated with paper decorations with kids' names on them. They bought the decorations at $1 apiece at lunch with the proceeds going to a children's hospital. There are decorations on that tree that were bought by Christians, Jews, Hindus, Moslems, atheists, and likely some that don't fit any of those categories. There's no strife over this "secular" Christmas approach, as the general opinion of almost everyone is: The season is too important to fight over! Along with this is the attitude that the public school, funded by ALL the public, should not be in the business of deciding who's holiday should hold sway.

Now regrarding the "majority rule" concept. Yeah, the majority can almost always crush the minorty. But the gains are short-lived, as most of those minorities (be they religious, ethnic, racial, or whatever) have a way of bouncing back. The Constitution, in particular the Bill of Rights, was designed in such a way as to protect the minority from always being crushed.

This is longer than I intended it to be, and is NOT meant as a lecture. What we're doing works for us.
