I have a John Deere 8hp 27" wide 2 stage. It is an excellent machine. I use it for walkways etc as I have a 4wd truck with a blade and tractors for the bigger areas. The John deere blower is approx 12 years old and has been trouble free.It handled the 1993 blizzard where we got 4" of heavy snow . My father has a newer JD which is also a good machine. However I have been told that JD no longer makes the walk behind blowers, they are called "Frontier" - sold by JD dealers . Dont know how good they are.

I have a Snapper 5.5 horse/22 inch cut. It has a electric start. I do my drive and several neighbors just for fun. It does a good job and have had no trouble since new in 1998 (where has the time gone).

If you can locate an older 8 hp Ariens I think youll like it, real work horse, mine starts on second pull. Second one ive owned, traded the first one off, big mistake. There about $300 off season.

I ahve sold and worked on a lot of snow blowers, I am an Ariens dealer and a Toro dealer. I only sell the Toro blowers, I have yet to find a blower that stands up to Toro in durabilty. That is why we still service and work on 20year old Toro blowers, don't see many other that old. Most of the newer 2 stage all come with electric start, makes them easier to start at 10 degrees and you have a lot of clothes on. If you are looking at a single stage blower, the Toro Snow Commander is a beast, but where you are, your snow ususally is a lot deeper, so 2 stage may be the way to go. But, if you are going to buy a Toro, you need to do it quick, I am out of blowers, my supplier is out of blowers, Toro is out of blowers, what is left is in dealer stock and in warehouses.

lots of good advice here, my 2 cents

you get what you pay for, MTD costs less to buy but you have to do more maintenance

appears to be 2 levels of Ariens with considerable price difference between them

saw an opened up, upside down Simplicity at Ace Hardware, that was one impressive machine, price to match, will it to the grandkids

neighbor has a small Toro that will out-throw anything on the block, prices down at the dealer are stunning, I try not to drool as I walk by

I'm about as cheap as they get, I cruise the streets in my pickup with some ramps during spring cleanup, grab those machines the yuppies throw away, fix them up or strip the good parts off, almost free mowers and snowblowers

I bought a used 1975 5hp Toro two-stage snowblower in 1985. It is still going. The Techumseh engine seems to start better than the Briggs and Stratton in winter. My 5hp B&S roto tiller is hopeless even on a cold day.

Toros are pricey but a good buy, new or used.

After five years of wrestling with a 42" blower on the front of a Wheel Horse tractor, I decided to look into a walk behind. The new MTD's, Yard Machines, Sears, and generics were built like junk in the details.

My research boiled down to the Toro 828 and the Ariens equivalant. I purchased the Toro with the finger-
tip steering and the plastic impeller housing & chute with a joystick control, and it is fantastic. I do a similar driveway, around the house, back to the deer feeders, and to the shed. With the recent death of my bro-in-law, I do his family's drive and walks between houses.

This blower is effortless to start and turns on a dime. No need to 'lock in' a wheel-hub to axle for two wheel drive and tough steering. Touch a trigger and it goes this way, touch the other and it goes that way. Pull both and pull it back. Take a good look at the construction of a machines impeller (second stage). Many are not strong enough and icy snow bends them. Also look at the auger construction. You don't want weenie sheer pins. A dead giveaway of poor auger welds. I prefer bearings over bushings, but bearings and repeated water/salt exposier burn out in no time. All carry the same engines/ Techumsa or Briggs'. There are TSB's on every machine out there - so get a look at those before you purchase. Good luck.

If what you wrote is accurate then 2 swipes with a good snow shovel should do. 10" by 40" ? LOL

Toro makes a real good little snow thrower.

I use a Honda 520 snow thrower. Works great.

If you go with a big one, look at Simplicity, they have a nice 9 h.p. snowblower.

I have a Honda snow blower and think it is great. The air intake set-up had a design problem which lead to it freezing often when the air was moist (as in heavy wet snow or slush) but Honda came up with a fix and added it, along with a new carb as there was a problem with the original - done after warranty had elapsed.

It's and 11HP engine and it will throw a lot of snow (and pebbles, sod, leaves and sticks too!)

They are expensive though, and honestly, I'm not sure it was worth the extra dough. I do like Honda engines, but the main reason I got it is for the tracks vs. tires which I felt that I needed on my steep, long drive.

Based only on me looking at the brands they have at Home Depot and Lowes vs. the Ariens at my power equipment dealer, I would go with Ariens. They look like they are well built and a value for the price. Look for yourself. To me, a telling feature is how the mechanism for turning the shute is designed. Some look like they wouldn't last the first storm.

Also, every other blower I see being used in the neighborhood is an Ariens.

As for the engines, I think most have Tecumsha Snow Kings which seem to be fine engines.

Don't get anything less than 8HP! You'll regret it the first time you need the governor to rev the engine to through some slush, or deep snow.

Good luck.

I can't tell you anything about those little snow blowers, but if it were me, I'd be looking for one with a Honda engine. They start with the first pull, on time, every time. I've yet to see another modern engine start like them on a recoil starter. If it's got an electric starter, ask yourself why. Sorry I can't help with the blower part... FWIW,

Rod

John

Most all the lawn equipment has been bought up by " MTD " ...not saying thats all bad but if you look close many of the main working parts are the same..... look them over closely and shop price....I have an "8HP MTV" with 110v elect start...I LOVE IT,after 4 years, the only problems are the skids need replaced...and high speed carb jet plugs up in spite of aditive.....

Hi John My favorite, and I have two of them are Ariens. one is my grand fathers purchased about 1967. It's been re ringed twice and needs a third. the motor makes some noise but it still throws snow like it did when it was new. Also has the side of the block patched up with J-B weld because it threw a rod about "1973".
My second machine I picked up for free cause it wouldn't run right.
I gave the carb a good cleaning and now it runs great. It is about a "1975" model.
I like the old junkers because I have to be able to throw a lot of debris. rocks cordwood etc, so I replace all the sheer pins in the augers and blower with mild steel bolts. I haven't broken a gearcase yet, bent the auger and blower fins and even sheered the bolts that I put in numerous times. As far as I'm concerned Ariens wrote the book on snow blowers, and parts are only as far away as your nearest dealer. Alot of people have even gone as far as to put Honda engines on them.
