This is a pathetic excuse for an examination. Those questions are designed to belittle and intimidate the reader, not to be answered. Check the board feet question in the mathematics section. It has no answer.

This document is the product of a small mind who wants to substitute the naming of facts and formulae for understanding -- pretty clear evidence that the author of the examination doesn't understand the material, either.

Not to be a butt, but knowing when this was printed would be helpful. My girlfriend's grandfather was the owner of that paper for sometime and he is still alive and lives in Salina. If someone could tell me when they think it was published, I could forward the question on to him to see if he remembers it being published. Small world that a guy from College Station, Texas would know who owned a paper in Salina, Kansas at one time.

as i looked at that i picture my great grandparents who didn't speak a word of english when they came over in the late 1800's, and it got me wondering...how many of you out there have ever seen your great or great great grandparents citizenship papers and applications for citizenship papers.., and how much they had to learn and how long it took for them to get them...when mom passed away, i have became caretaker of the photos documents...and consider them priceless as my ancestors must have, as they are all the originals...another 2 cents..i can't speell, good thin for computers.

I still think that it would be nice for collage age kids or young adults to know the names of the states that border on their home state. Thought I'm amazed at some of the things that are taught now there still seems to be something missing.

that's a tough test, but you have to remember the relevancy to the times they lived in and things they had to know...many of the questions appeared to me would be common knowledge to those children given their the fact the were 1st 2nd generation children, and world events playing out before them...i've got children in early years of school, and have seen many things to shake my head at, but this is the culture and product of our baby boom and older legacy...if we think kids are not bein taught the right things, then we should do somethin about it....but lets face this computer age stuff is here to stay...just like my parents saw the advent of tractors/electricity//autos etc...don't know if progress is better or not just different...my 2 cents.

The Modern Day "Old Order Amish " still adhere to the "8th" Grade Education Principle which is supported by a United States Supreme Court Decision that allows only such Education in thier Society. They seem to be successful at produceing very knowledgeable Children. My Forebears came to Kentucky in 1806 and I am surprised at the Number of them, according to Census, both Female and Male who could neither Read or Write including my own Father [1917-1981]. My Mother[1918-1971] had such 8th Grade only Education in Kentucky so the question of #1 School availability #2Needed at Home #3 Or just did not attend needs to be answered and sadly no one from that Era in my Family is still with us to answer.I'm not ridiculing My parents or Kentucky ,just commenting.

I hate even to get into this but this bashing of the educational system goes on forever. But if you want less than 20% of the population to graduate from 8th grade then we can continue to meet your quoted standard. (Check the stats on graduation rates over the past one hundred years)

It is like the quote, "If parents would do their jobs then schools could do their"s!". The essence of that quote is in every school and town report printed from 1820-1980 in the town of Northwood. :>

my dad's mother and my mothers dad both only went till the 8th grade.
both stopped because of need at home things were different then. Those 8th graders knew more about LIVING than any collage freshman does today. The only thing I noticed they didnt know was about open minded thinking... and sometimes that is what really gets a guy in trouble... listening to someone that really dont know what they are talking about.
