Howdy ya'll, First off, make sure this dosen't get into a brand war, and sorry for the off topic post, but it will be a farm truck. I jus' need honest opinions on what has worked and what hasn't for you. Background on use: Will need to pull a trailer with a 1000 to 1500 pound mower, plus traler weight, and other small items for mowing lawns. Will also need to haul 'bout half pallet of seed soybeans, wheat, and corn, as well as pull around empty grain wagons. Also, a daily driver for school, FFA, and other after school activities. Things I want: Four wheel drive is a must, going through fields, and going to worksites. Regular cab, longbed. Standard is preferrable, but automaitc will be allright. I am open to all brands, for now. Don't think anything below a half ton will do the job, but I could be wrong. Also, nothin' above a 3/4 ton. Open to diesel, as well as gas. Can't think of anything else now, but ask questions if ya' have 'em. Keep in mind this is NOT a wanted ad. Please don't tell me what you have for sale, or friends have for sale. Don't need it for at least 6 months. Thanks a bunch, an' sorry again for the OT post.

For what you want, a 1972 Chevy C20 would be pretty good. I still use mine. They are built strong, body and mechanical parts are still available, and you can work on them yourself. They ride nice and quiet. Get about 12 mpg. They won't drop in value either, because the collectors still like them. If you have a mind to, you can update them with later stuff. 1973 and newer are rust buckets. 71 didn't have front disc brakes, but you can retrofit them.

Toyota is going to be the best truck in the smaller class. I have had Chevy's and had very bad luck with them. A couple of Fords they didn't hold up bad. My latest truck has been a 1996 Dodge Ram it has not been too bad.160,000 miles needed to spend some money rebuilding the front end. I use Dads old 1986 Toyota with 170,000 mi. when I'm fixing my trucks. This thing is pretty much trouble free !

A slightly older F150 would fit the bill. Lots of those are around w/ 4.9(straight 6 300) 5 sp. manual Mazda transmissions, and regular cab long box. Mine is one such creature, 2wd, and I'm getting about 16-18 MPG at the moment. I wish I had 4wd, and my next truck will, but for a 2wd it does more work than most other 4x4 3/4 ton trucks around.

I pull 7-8 ton loads of hay in the winter when we buy from an auction. I'm not saying it's completely legal and/or a good idea, but the only time I have problems is getting going on ice (and wet clover) and stopping when I have an idiot in front of me, but that doesn't normally happen as I can only go about 20-25 mph w/ a load.

I wouldn't discount the Toyota trucks, There pretty stout machines and if/when I look for a second truck to run arround in I'll be looking for a used toyota tacoma or somthing like that. My nebighor had a Tundra that was virtually matinace free and they used it to pull a 16' goosneck stock trailer when they were showing goats. The truck stayed on the road every day just about and never had any problems.

Good luck

A Ranger will probably do OK for what you describe. However, the Ranger won't get any better mileage than the F150, and the 150 has more space in the cab, and there were probably more of them around with manual locking hubs. I wouldn't touch a ranger with automatic hubs generally, and one with vacuum hubs under absolutely no circumstances. I've got one, and they never work, and can't be made to work. They were so bloody bad that Ford did away with them after 2 years. '98-'00 were the bad years.
so, I'd probably go for a 150 or a 1/2 ton dodge. I'm not that picky on brand's anymore. I like ford trucks, but I've very little respect for their old windsor engines. The Ranger will have a very good little engine. 2.3's and 3.0L engines are tough as nails. Just leave those damn vacuum hubs where they're at.

Anything newer than a 1996 is going to be alot more expensive in the truck world, and 4wd diesels are still worth more than a gas model of the same year. Auto Hunter is full of diesel pickups, people must be dumping them because road diesel is still quite a bit higher than the price of gas and has been for some time. I wouldn't pay the extra price for a diesel, they are more expensive to run and more expensive to register right now, but they are nice to have for towing heavy stuff around with. For a 1,500lb load and trailer, I'd highly reccomend what I have, a 1996 Chevy Silverado half ton short bed stepside with a 200hp Vortec V6, 5spd standard shift, and 3:73 gears. My truck would pull that along with ease and I've towed up to a 6,000lb tractor on a 7'x16' bumper tow (I got an aftermarket heavy duty hitch that bolts directly into the frame) flatbed. 6,000lbs is pushing it though and it don't like it too much, takes all she's got in the hills and I'd highly reccomend a heavyier truck for long or fequent trips. Truck is awful good in the mud too. My biggest complaint is the stepside box is really small.

JDGrn., Don't have personal recent experience with what you want, but will pass on friends and relatives experience. Sounds like you want a regular cab long bed or an extended cab short bed. From what I can tell, Chevys for many years have gotten better gas milage, but recent Fords are doing better. BIL has 03 Chevy 4wd, ext cab, 8 cyl, has gotten 22 mpg empty. Friend with Ford 8 cyl, ext cab, 2wd gets 22 mpg. Don't know about towing mpg. Both these have auto trans.

Sounds like you will be using a trailer with no brakes. Check local laws if you are, but I think a 1/2 ton will be ok. I definately would not go below 1/2 ton if you will be doing this regularly. If you have trailer brakes, you could go to a smaller truck, but I don't think the gas milage would be any better.
Hope this helps.

JDG:

Allan has mentioned a Ranger, I had one, good little truck 4wd, 5spd, 4.0L v6. It had plenty of power, but as far as pulling anything, not enough brakes. Chevy, or Dodge I have no experience with. I have a 93 F250 4wd 7.3l Td w 5spd and 4.11 gears. I work it occasionally, and hard, but mostly it is a daily driver to work. Downside 14 MPG and $2.41 diesel. if you look at Ford, go 95 or newer, with 7.3 PSD. I ran one of these with an 8K load behind it for 200 miles and it did 16MPG, it also had the 4.11 gears, but it did have an automatic. Allan should have an idea what the new ones get for mileage, even loaded.

I have an 01 1/2 ton dodge v8 5 speed 4x4 with 8ft box. It's a tough simple truck it has no trouble hauling 10 round bales on a trailer and it can carry a ton of feed with no problems. If you have a good reputable auto dealer in your area tell them what you want. They have access to auction lists and can find that rare 4x4 work truck, especially if you have 6 months. My wife sells cars and does this all the time for customers.

I nomally just lurk but will weigh in on this one.
I had/have a Jeep Commanche long bed, standard cab, standard transmisson. This was a mid size truck and only Dodge and Toyota make them today. Truck did everything I asked of it execpt pull real heavy loads. Should say I had it set up with a tall rear end.
The I decided that after 15 years of good service and with the maintainence costs rising I should but another truck. There are NO mid size trucks with beds over 6 feet. That forced me to a full size truck and I decided on a heavy 3/4 ton with diesel, long bed, extended cab.

This truck pulls like a tractor, and carries really big loads BUT it is a lot of truck. I gave up some manuverability. Wife calls it the INTIMINATOR.
I'm not sorry I bought it just recognizeing what I gave up and what I got.

So here's what I gather from your post
1) Long bed--no small or mid-size trucks have them since what mid 90's and only Dodge.
2) Diesel--that a 3/4 ton or larger truck.
3) Regular cab-- That will limit what you can put in the cab for security. The extended cabs today are just too much but believe me when I say an extension of about 8 inches is really desirable.

What you say you will haul and pull can easily be done with an F150 or 1500 trucks (1/2 tons). However the manufacturers have not offered diesel in the 1/2 trucks.
If you need the truck in 6 months then you have time to find the right truck, or at least the one that really grabs your attention--start looking now.

Thanks for the help VADAVE,
1) Don't think that anything less than a 1/2 ton will be able to stop that much weight. And any brand is open right now.
2) Diesel would be nice, but I don't think I need it yet. this is just a truck to get me through some farm work, and mowing lawns. 3)Have thought some, and have decided that an extended cab would be nice, but definantly don't want a crew cab, too long with long bed.

As of right now, it is looking like an F150, or Dodge or Chevy 1500. I think these are the only ones I can afford to drive.

I would agree on a Dodge. I have a '93 single cab,3/4 ton, long bed, automatic, 4 wheel drive, Cummins. It has worked everyday of it's life and will still get out on the big road and blow smoke with the rest of them. I pull a 25' flatbed gooseneck and it will get about 15 mpg loaded on the interstate. It has only given one problem. About 2 years ago the computer went out. Cost about $300 to repair. I feel it will last another 10 years.

I assume you're buying a new truck right? Anyways, up in these parts, a regular-cab pickup with a long box is a rare breed, they just don't seem to stock them as a regular item, I guess a guy could order one. I imagine they stock what sells and the "old-style" worktruck is not a sought-after item these days. A friend of mine drove Chevy and GMC 3/4 ton pickups for the last 35 years but has switched over to the Nissan Titan and he loves it. Not that he didn't like the GM's (obviously, he drove them forever) but he really does like the Nissan. It's a pricey devil though. As for myself, I'd go to a small truck like the Ford Ranger with a V-6 or maybe a Dakota Dodge, but that might not meet your hauling needs.

DODGE. nothing else has to be said. If you are looking at a diesel truck, use some sites like dieseltruckresource.com and tdr. Good information and you can see lots of posts of repairs and fixes people have done. All trucks will have their faults. Being able to fix them yourself is the key.

My personal choice would be a "Ford" Super Duty ,Long Bed F-250,4-Door, Power Stroke Diesel w/5 Speed Manual Trans/4Wheel Drive, and I also would need a Very Solvent Checking Account. A Chevy or Dodge also probably would fill the Bill if not Automatic Trans equipped. You specify a good all around Farm/Pleasure Truck and the Ford is it.
