I have a IH 966 with a ac delco altenator on on it but it is not charging. I took the altenator to a local parts store and they said it is ok. I traced all the wires back they all look in good shape. Does any body know the correct way it should be wire up at the altenator and where these wires should go. It has the battery, 2 plug, and ground on it for connections. I have looked at other tractors but every one seems to be wired up differently. Is there a way to checked it at the altnator itself while running on the tractor? What size of pulley should be on it it might not be getting enough rpms? Does this tractor have a internal or external regulator becuase under the steering wheel there is a black box that looks like one and if so is there a way to check this?

Sounds like you got the Delco with external regulator. Can switch to a internal regulated 10SI Delco reasonably. Some good wiring and tech info at Mad Electrical site. They make some nice adapter plugs or you can wire your own. If it has a alt. charging light you may have to wire in a resistor to make it work right with the 10SI Delco. Older Motor Manuals will tell you how to test and repair those Delcos.

Ryan,

Some did, some didn't.

Is the 2-wire plug on the delcotron square or is it long and skinny? If it is square looking and has one blue wire, it takes a regulator.

The pulleys are usually 'bout 4" or so.

Hollar back 'bout that plug and I can scan either schematic fer ya.

Yes,

You can test the internal regulator by grounding the tab inside the "D" hole to the case.

If you do a search in google for delco alternators and single wire delco alternators, you will find a bunch of information on how to ID a delco alternator and some trouble shooting. I have converted many to one wire delco alternators and in my oppinion this is the way to go..... sounds to me that you have an external voltage regulator and it may be bad....
single wire delco alternators have an internal voltage regulator and are very easy to convert to most applications. Lots of "hotrodders" use them when building cars.....

Also when it comes to delco altenators there is a old guy in my town that says that the delcos put on tractors really need to be converted to a swing arm type brush holder. Vibration in the disels and proably gas put groves in the side of the brushes and then they will stick. He says that the car style will only last a little while. I have seen the swing arm style and it takes a different type of rear housing also. It isnt cheap but neither is working on the altenator every so often. He does a lot of them.
