Those caps are a form of a valve rotator. I only ever rebuilt one Fordson head and I had to put some seats in it because as mentioned in the next post the guy did not keep the exhaust covered.. You may have a problem with the rocker arm hitting the springs and retainers. Did you loose one?

i did not loose them but they were on the inlet valves. I started looking for that problem when i saw in an instruction book that the clearence was bigger for intake valve. on all other engines, the clearance for exhausts is allways a little bigger.i am running since 1200 hrs that way and just till now ididn't have any problems or damage; still i want to have it on a correct way.

Diederik, I am going out today to rework my 172 head. I do believe those caps are there for lubrication or at least to help disperse the heat from the ex. valve stem. After so many hours the ex. valve seals usually disapear, desinagrate from the blow by. Richard

thank you very much to all for the good helps, but if you are in the possibility to check it out in detail, i would be very happy. My engine is a 4-cil. 61hp. The only number i can find is S 139671 and on most of big parts is marked: ENFO. one old farmer told me it is an engine from 1954. it is installed since 1977 in a boat and is coupled to one hydraulique gearbox Paragon P 230 L.

It will be a week, no Ford dealer close. Now I laughed. I went to Costa Rica a few years ago and a man came to the store with the same engine in a 1/2 ton Dodge pickup.

Yes iknow, but during sailing i often think that this old good horse is having a good life to be retired that way. Once, in France, i connected to a 300metricton riverbarge and after 5minutes,was able to give her a speed of about 3nautic.miles!!! so, you know, that moment i was very proud and understood that my major was there again were it belongs: on a tractor, a water-tractor!!! Iam searching for motor-manual for that type of engine. Can somebody give me information about the number under injector 1 : 'S 139671 '. It's a 4-cil. 61Hp with max.revolution of 2300rev/min The same engine is also available with 49Hp.and also with 6cil. 106 Hp. what is super-major? What is the meaning of Enfo in some parts. By the way; in Manilla, a collegue of me, is powering a rice-mill with a major of 49Hp. He goes from farm to farm!!

I believe the main function is to keep the rain out when it's not running. If you keep a can over it when you park it outside you don't need one.
The one on my Farmall rings like a bell until the throttle opens up. My neighbor says he can always tell it's me coming. I took it off the once I was in a parade.
