I recently owned a john deer 4010 old tractor. It is hard to start in the morning. I did change all the filters and full pump also rebuild the injector pump. It is diesel it has left side PTO handles. This handle does not engage the PTO and too loose. Someone came and told me that the handle came out from the connection at the end. It only needs to be reconnected by pushing it back. I looked for a way out to get access to do that but I could not find a space to access. Does anyone know a way to connect the handle stick back?

Take the cover that has the key switsch on it, in side is the linkage rod that moves up and down and has a long nut like on a turn buckle to adjust the pto, the rod goes into the transmission case to the pto fork, take the bottom cover off and move the pto lever to see if the fork moves.

If you also take the top cover off the console, in addition to taking off the cover with the key switch, you should be able to view the whole pto linkage. There is a rod with a bent end that hooks into the pto handle. It then goes into the long adjusting nut, which connects to a rod which goes through the floor into the clutch housing. If memory serves me, the clutch is ajusted as follows.

Position the PTO lever so the detent is holding it . This is neutral, just ahead of the brake position.

Remove the cotter pin holding the rod to the handle.

Ajust the rod in or out of the adjusting nut until there is 3/8" vertical free play to line up the rod with its hole in the lever. You lift the rod by hand until it feels resistance. The 3/8" will be above the hole.

reinstall the rod in the handle and reinstall the cotter pin.

If I have this wrong, someone will tell me.

John

Your detailed steps are better than the book. But my question is how can I reach the end I have both plates off the one on top and the one on the key. And also the bottom pan. I can not reach the end of the rode to be able to follow your direction. I put my hand on the left side just next to the key and could not go past 15” down and got stuck. I did try to get the handle out but I couldn’t. I will be able to fix it if I am able to get to it.lol…I will post a photo tomorrow as soon as I get back from the farm. God Bless you.

I did that but I did not see the end of the rod (fork). I think it came off the fork. It is too small to put my hand from the bottom so I can feel the connection. I tried to see any other place I can get access to it but no luck. The book shows how to connected or replace it but it does not say how to take it off or put it back or how to access it…..funny thing.

Old! Heck thats my newest tractor. Do you have a cab on there? should be able to remove the sides above the battery box, May have to lift the cabo off to get the console off depending on model. All my manuals are at the farm but if no other help I could go get them for you. Let me know. Bob
