Ford 8N Flooding

Can any one please advise how to fix a flooding problem on my 8N? This summer the tractor started running rough and it seemed like a lack of fuel. I checked/cleaned sediment bowl/lines, adjusted carb and replaced plugs. That helped some but soon it became very difficult to start. Took carb apart & cleaned it with carb cleaner. Now it floods like the float is stuck or doesn't float. Took it apart again and float seems fine. What am I missing?

I would guess the float is sticking or has a hole in it and gas is getting inside the float.

I'd post the question on the Ford 9N/2N/8N board on this site. There are some guys there who are experts on their old N's.

IS this occurring after sitting for a while? At risk of sounding stupid....are you turning the fuel off while tractor is not running? These are notorious for flooding if fuel left on (I have seen crankcase full of gas as a result)

Hi,

There is only one place that the fuel can come over the top and that is at the needle/seat. Now you just have to find out "why".

I've seen porous bowls, but they were always the newer pot metal types.

Is there a lead slug missing from the inlet drill passage?

Stuck or missing needle valve (not sure if there is a spring) would be my 1st thought. If you are like me the more times I take it apart the more likely I have left a part out or misinstalled it. If everthing is ok I would adjust the float per manual, then adjust carb per manual. Pretty simple, carb when I rebuild them I make sure to clean ALL passages with solvent and air.

Thanks for all of your replys. Yes, the fuel shutoff is always closed. The carb is not new or a replacement; it came with the tractor 3 years ago. I did clean and blow out all passages of carb with cleaning fluid and air. I have not adjusted the float yet or inspected the needle valve. I don't think I missed a part putting it back together, but could have. The tractor is remote from me now and it is minus 20 degrees there today, so it will be a while before I can try your suggestions. Stay tuned. Thanks again.
