I just bought a gas Farmall M. I haven"t yet bought manuals but want to fill the gas and change the oil and transmission fluid before winter sets in. I don"t plan to use the tractor until spring. What gas, oil and transmission fluid should I use? Is unleaded regular gas OK? Should I add a lead additive?

The transmission will have plain old 80W-90, most any brand will do. Be prepared for a lot of water to be in the transmission, my 350 was only suppose to have 9 gallon or so and actually had 4+ gallons of water in addition to the 9 gallons of oil. I was a bucket short when I needed one most.

Before winter sets in? It isn't winter yet in Minnesota?

Regular gas (no lead additive needed, but I like to put in some stabilizer if the gas will be sitting for several months). Regular motor oil 10w-30 should be fine. 90wt gear lube in the transmission (I think it takes about 11 gallons). Make sure you change the oil and trans when it's not too cold, any moisture in either will freeze and not drain out.

It probably has an oil bath air cleaner that should have non-detergent 30wt motor oil in it, and the steering gear box might need to be filled with 90wt or thin grease.

Just the good old cheap gas works well in that tractor and forget the lead stuff its only good for one thing and thats wasteing your money. As far as engine oil some say a 10W-30 or 10W-40 my self I like the stright weight oils like in your case a 30W oil.
