Charging Problem 140

I put a new 6V battery in my 140. The charge indicator reads 14 on discharge side after running tractor for approximately 30 minutes. I notice when I turn on lights it jumps to 0. I did repolarize generator. Tractor runs fine after I “jump it off” but still drags when starting.

The tractor had the old battery in backwards(positive was not grounded) when I started working on it. The old battey would not pass load test. The past owner said he adjusted points in regulator because it was overcharging.

Any ideas??

Wayne, I agree with Old (seems we usually do, great minds think alike maybe??? lol) whose got ya started down the right track. FIRST thing I would do if the battery has been swapped grounds, is to POLARIZE the genny. Then see if when you turn lights or ignition on when shes NOT running the ammeter swings to - discharge as it should. If it swings over to + charge do as Old was referring to and swap the ammeter leads as its reading bass ackwards. Once its wired correct and you polarize the genny it should swing to - discharge not running but + charge when running if she working n wired correct. Even without an ammeter working she ought to make the lights glow noticeably brighter from idle to wide open if shes charging.

Special thanks for all the inputs. It will be around end of next week before I get to the farm to check the 140 out again. Plus now I have a owners manual and a troubleshooting flowchart.

????
The "charge indicator" on my 140(1963 model) has numbers(0-30). The charge indicator in the owners manual shows D 0 C. Is the indicator with the numbers original equipment? I'm thinking maybe someone changed it out and wired it backwards. I remember the needle went to the "charge side" when I turned the lights on. This may add the the reason I found the 6v battery in backwards.

I'd take an volt meter and check to see what volts you get from the battery when its running. If you see around 7-8 volts then its chargeing, if 6 or less its not. If its chargeing then I would guess some one also hooked up the amp gauge back wards like the battery was.
