Can anyone tell me why there is so much end play
on the crankshaft-about .155?

It is a John Deere thing that happens. Because as you push the hand clutch in gear it actually pulls against the end thrust adjustment which is corrected by loosening the flywheel, having the clutch lever held back, bump the flywheel in the the center with al arge piece of wood between the flywheel and the hammer to avoid chances of causing a crack in flywheel from the hammering. It is a good idea to take the clutch cover off and have someone hold a heavy piece of timber against the crankshaft end bolt on that side to prevent damage to the main bearing babbit thrust surface. Be sure there are not sign of spline damage on the crank end at the flywheel, and check to make sure flywheel tab is lined up into the oil slinger and it is usually a good idea to replace the flywheel clamping bolts with new grade 8's as they will stretch beyond their clamping ability. Learned all this fron working for JD dealer in 50's and 60's.

Your end play is adjusted by moving the flywheel in. Maybe the flywheel came loose or the clutch driving disk. Its either worn or loose. Ron Mn.
