i too disliked high school except for sports. Soon i was moving barrels around for 75 cents a hour. I knew there was a better way to make a living so back to night school. I was so tired after work i asked the professor if i could stand in the back of the room because i was afraid i would fall asleep if i sat down. To make a long story short i went on to Seton Hall graduated in 1954, continue on to Montclair State University, and took time out to teach and retired in 1988. Still not content went back and received my PhD in 2001 at the age of 70. i say this not to brag but to show, how in my case, i needed to fulfil my desire to learn. At my age i do not pay any tuition at a community college so i take at least one course a year.

i guess everyone has to find his niche in life. be happy guys.....

I was one of those who went to college in 64 and graduated in 68. Used my teaching degree for a few years and then off to do other things like, water plant operator, farming and ranching, freight hauler. Back to school to renew teaching certificate and now teaching at a community college. Still raise a few calves to butcher ( grass fat), make a little hay, drive the 54 JD "R" around for the fun of it, pull the rake with the farmall A, ride the saddle horse for the fun of it, and looking forward to selling the duplex and buying some acreage to retire on as soon as I can. Enjoyed school way back when and still enjoy teaching now. Will be fun when I retire to be a retired hobby farmer... Bud

Aloha, If I had my youth back and started high school all over again, I could be president of (USA) today. LOL Now at my age, no way! I have all the knowledge right in front of me (The Big Wide Web).

Nahh, I hated school. But going to school to avoid work? If you have that atitude you probably won't ever amount to much anyway. As far as bitching bosses and co-workers, I've never had either.

I hated school also....but that was grade school and high school...I HAD to do that....and i hated it...now that i'm in college and doing something i WANT to do, i enjoy it. now people say that college is funner and better...and i agree. when i meant avoid work, i meant work that i wouldn't enjoy. getting an education and going farther will give more job oppertunities...job you would look for ward to each day....

That's a lie kid. True contentment comes from being happy with what you already have.

Sorry, didn't mean to step on your toes. You said you were in school so yeah me being an older man I can call you "kid" didn't mean any disrespect by it. I like young guys too and have young friends. And I didn't call you a "liar" What I meant was that the thinking that a better education will get you a better job and so lead to more money and more happiness ain't always so. It is a lie fed to us by the father of lies himself. Education is good and I think we all could be smarter. No, you just keep on studying, and do the best you can. You've come too far to turn back now.

I'm in last year Marine Engineering and will be sad to see it go. Pushing the old pencil around. Watching the pretty teachers go by. Looking at the trees in the court yard while trying to get that tough question that almost kept me awake last nite. Yep, it's good.
I'm 42 and I was lucky enough to be able to go back. I will be glad to get back to work again though. But, if I can afford it in another 10 years I would like to go get my BA in physics.
I like learning and doing new things.
I have to remember that. Variety is the spice of life.
As far as going back to avoid work?- Oh ya!
And why not. I worked hard manually for those 18 years I was out of school. And younger. And I enjoyed pretty much all of it. But now I want to use my mind and figure out the riddles of engineering.
To stay in shape I will just have to ride my mountain bike more. With my new friends I made at school.
For me it was great to go back would do it again if I can in the future.

I decided to quit school after completing the eighth grade. When my dad got wind of it ,he planted 20 acres of navy beans, gave my brother and I a hoe and told us he didnt want to see a"weed" in them. The season before,he had planted buckwheat in the field, that only was partially harvested due to the rains of the century.I think you can picture the hell we faced daily until the start of school in the fall. We were the first ones in line to go back!!!! W4

Everything in life has a time and a place. I've been out of college for 15 years. The first few years I missed college but now it seems so far away it was a different life. Even if I had found a reason to stay such as getting a masters degree, it would not have been the same because my friends and people I cared graduated and moved on with their lives. I really enjoyed my time in college and appreciated it while I was there. Appreciate where you have been but look forward to the future.

Dave

I did- and it was great! Got my BA in '72, worked in ag finance for 12 years, and went back to school in '84, at the age of 36. It was like a vacation. Would love to do it again, but at age 57, retirement is looming and that looks even better. Then I can get in some quality shop time on those tractor projects- seems like I spend all my weekends fixing the wife's horse farm stuff now.

I was out of high-school seven years before starting to college. During that interval I lived and worked in more than ten states for two major rail road and three electronics, missile and armament manufactures. After getting the four year degree I have not set the world on fire career wise, in fact if I had stayed with the first job out of high-school (R.R. retirement is very good.) I would be better off financially as things turned out. Higher education provides a lot more benefits to a person than just occupational training. Learning can be pleasant and we should encourage it both in and out of school. Oh… stop me before I start pontificating.

Youth is definitely wasted on the young, lol. There are many times I wish I was back in college (spent 11 years there (but I did get an undergrad and 2 grad degrees), or at least back in that time of my life. I dont miss the last few years of it, working full time, farming full time, and night school. Almost killed me.

Of course a frog wishes he had a pocket to pack a pistol in so he doesnt have to be afraid of snakes. Thats one reason I decided to scale back this past year. Kind of became a "who am I fooling". Got a good job, I dont need to put up 10,000 square bales just b/c I can. Decided to become more open minded, smell the roses a little, and take up some non farm hobbies.

I would rather work then go to school, school doesnt pay you to go. As far as aging goes---the older you get the more companies want your skills and as you grow older you get wiser. Of course with age comes other problems----we wont go there.

That`s why they say "Youth is wasted on the young". You tend to get a bit wiser as you age, and realize that learning is actually fulfilling and enjoyable. If you find the right job, and continue learning new things, you may find that you enjoy working as much as school. A lot of the people here tend to poke fun at "college types, who don`t know anything", but I bet everyone of them is hoping their own children get a college education. I sincerely hope you find that job that keeps your education rolling on! Good luck ...Stan
