friend has oliver 1650 tractor it will crank till the battery dies but will not start. It used to start right up. the only change that was made was we put a fuel filter in the line going to the carburator. However it will start if you use starting fluid. We are completely boggled by this. By the way once tractor starts runs like a scaulded dog.

I had a 1655 with a diesel engine and the problem with that was the starter was way too small, cranked but would not start. It was a common problem with Olivers, I even went to the auto parts and exchanged the type 30 Delco-Remi starter for a type 35 as I was told to do by some one and my parts guy at the auto parts said you must have an Oliver tractor.

Is the choke plate on the carburetor actually moving. I have seen choke cables slip on the clamp by the carb before. When you choke it it feels like everything is o.k. but it isn't.

Let me guess you wnet to an auto parts store and got a fuel filter made for a car or truck right?? Well if so theres your problem, those filters and made for fuel systems with a fuel pump not a system like a tractor has. Seen many tractors that will not run or will not run right with them in the line. Every tractor I have gotten over the years with one I removed it and threw it as far as I could.

Did you check the flow of fuel from the sediment bowl to the carburetor? I have had dirt or bugs get in the bowl from things that were in the tank restricting the flow of fuel. The 1650 is thirsty and always needs fuel flow of fuel at all times or won't run. Hope this points you in the right direction.

yes checked the flow of fuel the fuel filter we put in the fuel line after the sediment bowl is full of fuel. but I thought that since we put the fuel filter in that we disrupted the flow of fuel and starved the carb. tell me if you think this is possible.

thanks,
bob

It's absolutely possible. The sediment bowl is good enough alone to filter out dirt and other crap. They have a screen in them that keeps the big chunks out, and then the smaller particles go to the bottom of the bowl, while the clean gas goes out the top and to the carb.

Like Old says, if it's an auto type filter, it's made to have a pump pushing fuel through it, not being gravity fed like a tractor. If it ran fine before, the first thing I would do would be to remove the filter.
