Case 580B Hoe questions

Hi guys,

I looked at a case 580b yesterday. Started easily, and ran good. Only a little smoke/blow by. Hour meeter showed 5300 but wasn't working. Pins were not too bad. Couple of questions. There were 2 cylinders that leaked heavily, like 3 drips per second and the injection pump had a decent drip. Also, the loader was a bit jerkey, but could have been due to low hydraulic fluid. Are those things to be very concerned about, or just a nuisance to fix? Thanks much, it is the first hoe I've ever operated at all.

I had a B, it leaked hydraulic oil between the engine and transmission. The tractor had to be split to repair it. Cost a lot of money at the dealer. $8000.00 seems a little high for that old of tractor. I would look for a C or newer, they claim that the oil system was changed and the tractor doesn"t have to be split to repair a center leak. I traded mine (and some money) for a Super E, 4wd with a heated cab. It is a better tractor, I was told it has the Cummins engine and much more power than a B. The E developed a fuel pump leak, I thought just a seal, when I got it back from the repair shop (almost $900.00 later for a complete rebuild) I was told that it was worn out due to using road fuel and to use an additive for more lubrication. Just my 2 cents, Bill

It is just for my personal use. Of course it would still need to work well enough. Yep, it was leaking cold hydro. There were about 5 cylinders that need repacking at least. The injector pump leaking might have been a loose seal on one of the lines or something, hard to tell(actually have the same problem on my MF 175, but not as bad). I'd probably use it for digging spetic tank and lines. Putting in irrigation lines and the usual around the farm stuff. He wants $8000 for it. Any other thoughts? Thanks guys, it's a big help having people with actual knowledge around.

Good old backhoe but can cost a lot to keep going and depending on if you plain to make some $$ with it or just use it on the farm. If for a farm then if it doesn't cost to much I'd go for it. Have a friend that has one and its not a bad old thing.

Hi Keith,

The first thing I would do is dig a hole for about a hour as that will heat up the hydraulic oil, (thins the oil), and then tells just how bad the hydraulic system really is.

If it's leaking on cold oil, you can just about bet it's running out with warm oil. Extend the loader and hoe to carry tractor weight, then shut the engine off as see how long it takes for the tractor to fall on the ground. That will tell you how many cylinders are internally leaking.

A backhoe is nothing more than a money pit, probably more so than a motor boat. From what little info you gave, I would be surprised if you didn't spend $3ooo in parts to get it back to working to snuff on the hydraulic side. Engine parts would be above that.

Cylinders are not that hard to rebuild, just takes time. Buy a set of manuals for it as you will need them.
