Idiot Light????

I have looked, searched, called, asked, and went high and low trying to find a 12 volt incandescent panel light rated at least 200 ma to use on the alternator sensing wire! It seems to be a thing of days gone by and the only kind anyone has or knows anything about is a LED Type and that includes NAPA.

On Bob"s wiring diagrams the only information given about this lamp is a # 1815 lamp. That is all well and good! Where the heck do you find the rest of it like the lamp holder and lens cover?
If anyone knows, please share!

Thanks,
Rex

The light as already mentioned is available through JD. If you want to ad a resistor for your alternator then while you are at the JD store get a resistor for updating a JD 4440. The original engine wiring harness's has resistance built in the excitor wire. Now the updated engine harness has a resistor that plugs into the harness seperately. The engine harness has a foot note to also order the resistor part # or have the parts person type in kit and it will be listed.

Ha Ha Ha Ha. Reminds of years back when I bought a brand new Dodge... I don't know, was a '84 pickup made by Mitsubishi but said Dodge on it, whatever it was called. Was easy to park in Chicago when I'd moved there. Anyway, at 50,000 miles some "idiot" light came on just like that for no reason that I could find. When I got home opened and read the user manual and it said at 50,000 the... something or other idiot light will come on as a reminder to change the timing belt. Huh!?!? It was running great, so looked under the dash and found a tiny switch that turned that particular idiot light off, figuring was some sort of ploy to get me into the dealer to pay $$$ for nothing. I'll bet was about 50,100 miles on the way home from work on like a record cold blizzardy day when that little SOB quit on me in the middle of an intersection. The timing belt broke. Ha Ha Ha Ha. Who was the idiot? Me, as usual. LOL.

Have used a little peanut bulb like are used in marker lights on cars, very successfully in several installations. Sockets, etc are available at NAPA.

Aloha, I put in a search on the web and had several hits and this is one of them. I will post the link for you and if you want to do your own searching, search for (1815 lamp).

A auto supply or better yet a truck parts place that is a dealer for Cole Hersee or Borg Warner products should have a pilot light assembly for a reasonable price. I'm not sure they have any with a built in resistor though. I'll check my catalog or you can see for yourself at www.colehersee.com I carry some of the Cole Hersee products in stock also like some of the pilot lights and we use them all the time for battery switch on-off indication and other indications on fire trucks.

That is one of a few reasons why I like to use a diode instead.

Hi Old, I have exhausted myself trying to find the right one. I can understand what you mean but I want visual confirmation.

Thanks,

I also have had fair luck useing a light from a gauge. But I have them laying around due to the fact that when I put a new gauge on a tractor I have the little lite left over and have used them.

Those really don't have the right resistance either old and I would'nt have a lens cover for one.

Looks like I will be forced to use a ceramic risistor as Bob suggested.

Thanks,
Rex

Thats another reason I use the diode and if I want to know that the system is working I use an amp gauge. But I'm also a guy that thinks idiot lights are for idiots. No offence intended

Use a readily-available low-current pilot light, and parallel a 5-watt ceramic power resistor across it.

Select an appropriate resistance to get the current you need to excite the alternator.

I can do that but finding a good location for the ceramic resistor is what I wanted to avoid.

Thanks Bob,

Rex

Dixie,

If you don't mind spending about $25.00, stop in at your friendly Deere dealer, and get the complete charge indicator lamp for a 4020.

They are heavily built, have a lightning bolt on the lens, indicating charging system, and will accept your choice of minature bayonet-base lamps.

The part number is AT14699.

That is great. Thanks for the information Bob. I tried to find the part on the JD website before, but no luck.

Let me know if I can return the favor.

That unit was my first though, but I didn't post it, because most people would have freaked at the price.

I believe that to be the correct part number for the complete charge indicator assembly. The number has changed a couple of times (as well as the price) over the years!
