I have a 87 F250 with the 351 Windsor motor and just got done doing a complete brake line job on it. Now is doesnt start. It ran fine while doing the brake job but as soon as I was done it did not want to start. If I spray some ether in the carb, it will run for seconds. There is gas in the tank too. Where is the gas filter on that model truck? Is there one filter or two? Any other things that I might try? Thanks.

Change the mechanical fuel pump on the engine.
Or at least disconnect it somewhere on the carb side and crank it over for a little bit, fuel should gush out with a good stream and some force. be careful and try to catch it in a coffee can. Might be a good idea to disconnect the ign, coil.

only a fuel injected ford has an inertia switch (red button) on it to interrupt the fuel flow. The easiest way would be to take the fuel line off at the carb and if you have a vacuum gauge you can check to see if it has any pressure. Most mechanical fuel pumps put out 3-5 pounds of pressure. If you don't have pressure then check the line at the pump from the tank. Usually if you take the line off with the gas cap on, there is enough suction to have gas run out. You can also put an air gun into the filler neck and with low pressure and very short blast you should get fuel to flow. If that is okay then the pump probably went out. If you have the vacuum gauge you can check the pump also by hooking it up to the tank side fitting and cranking it and it should create a vacuum.

How long did it sit waiting for the brake job?

You say it is a carbureted engine. Well, today's gas sometimes causes the inlet needle valve in the carburetor to gum up and stick closed on a vehicle that has sat fo a week or two, or longer.

Sometimes, a sharp "rap" with the plastic handle of a screwdriver near the fuel inlet of the carburetor will free it up, so gas can again get into the carburetor.

It's worth a try.

Get a full can of starter fluid. Have someone start the motor as you continually give it small squirts of starter fluid. If it runs fine as long as you continue giving it ether and then dies as soon as you stop then you definitely have a fuel delivery problem. Check one of the repair manuals from a parts store. My 93 Ford Bronco with 5.0L (302ci) had an electronic fuel pump inside the fuel tank. After trying everything under the blazing sun to find the problem the starter fluid shows it wasn't getting gas. Changed the pump problem solved.

Almost forgot as someone else mentioned. Check your emergency fuel shut off first. This is a red button either located underneath the dash or behind the passenger side panel located at the feet, depending on year model. Push it in to reset.

Electric fuel pumps are normally fused. You may have shorted something and blew the fuse. Check your fuse ..... Stan

You might want to make sure you don't have a fuel line connected to the rear brakes or something goofy like that. You don't say whether this is fuel injected. If it is, you may need to check and make sure you didn't knock a wire loose going to the in tank fuel pump. Or another thought is reseting the emergency fuel cut off switch under the dash above the clutch pedal on the firewall. This switch cuts power to the fuel pump(s)in the event of sudden fuel pressure loss from a ruptured line from an accident or other misfortune.

No this engine is NOT fuel injected. It is a 351 Windsor with a 4bbl carb. I also found that it also has a mechanical fuel pump mounted on the front driver side of the motor that is cam driven. I squirted a little gas in the carb directly and it wants to fire and might run for a second then die out. As the starter is cranking, the motor seems to fire for a complete revolution then die and the starter keeps turning the motor.

Just wild guess that the fuel pump (electric) is in the fuel tank and that the brake work has disconnected to power supply to the pump.

There should be a red push button reset under the dash on the drivers side(if fuel injected)in Ford cars it it is in the trunk on the left side.I have seen these pop when nothing more was done to a car than lift it up and let it back down again. It is a bump switch to shut off the fuel pump in an accident.
