I sell those carports you see at every used car lot in some towns.. I am going to build my own from pieces of some old ones I have taken down, and I would like to seal the edge seams on the 29 gage roof material which runs sideways to the way it is really supposed to work.
There is a 4 foot span between frame bows, and I have seen in heavy snow the sheets will tend to separate and drip some..

Is there anything you guys would recommend for the side overlaps? I was thinking good old silicone sealer from a caulking gun but it is gonna be messy. One metal manufacturere recommends "mastic sealer" whatever that is..
Thanks...and you guys DO rock!;-)

Hi Truck,

I've never seen 29ga sheeting that was rated to clear span 48" without 6" deep intrerlocking ribs and then I don't think it would be allowed in snow country as it wouldn't hold the snow load weight.

To answer your question, vertical seams on 2ft span sheeting overlapp one rib that seals the joint and overlapp 3" on each horizontal lapp. This is usually adaquote for sealing the sheeting joints.

I have wanted extra sheet tie down ability's and used Byutal caulk to spot hold the joints. Once dry you would need to cut the sheets apart to remove them as you can not get the joint apart using Byutal. So to make a repair then you would need to make some fancy SM work on the seams to replace one sheet.

Truck, they make a special caulking for this that comes in a roll. I used it on my barn roof. Applies in seconds and give a 100% seal. It is quite thin and maybe about 3/8 inch wide. Got it at the local MetalMart.

I have always heard it called tacky-tape. but like you said it comes in a roll and is the only way to go as far as I am concerned. Once the sun hit's that metal and it "melts" so to speak it forms a great seal.Any metal building supply place should have it. I doubt the DIY stores carry it.

Is this the same stuff you'd use to seal the seams on a grain bin?
