I have a Farmall 666 gear drive. Need to replace PTO shaft. If I remove the bolts from the back plate will the shaft slide out? Also, is the PTO shaft the same as hydro static?

Thanks
Doug

It so happens, that I just had mine apart. It is simple as the post above stated remove the 4 bolts, slide it out and tilt the PTO shaft down so that the pickup clears and remove it. Unless something is broken you should need the plates and gasket. It helps to have some sort of hoist AKA engine crane to hold it to line it up going back in.

I used two 10 inch bolts cut the heads off, screw them in the top holes get the picup pipe in side then slide the unit on the bolts put the bottom bolts in then remove the guide bolts replace the top bolts. 10 inch may not be the exact length.

Do you need to replace the shaft, or do you need to rebuild the PTO unit. Is the shaft broke or does it just not work. If you are going to work on it you self, first I would recomend getting a service manual. At most big farm stores, Case IH Dealer??, or very top left on this page. As your second question no it is not hydrostatic. Hydro is sorta like a auto trans. The four bolts on the back are to remove the entire unit, to do this you must drain the rear end fluid or park the front end down hill, on the front side of the unit is a suction pipe that angles down, you must be careful not to damage it. If the unit is not working first check the rearend fluid, dipstick in floor board under steering wheel. Next I would check hyd. pressure to the unit. it has its own pump to engage it and hold it engaged. I still would recomend getting a service manual first. Jim
