Happened to be driving by a local implement dealer's lot today. Noticed a Farmall 706 and JD 24T baler. Waited until I got home to call him. Said he wanted $4250 for the 706. He didn't know how many hours were on it but said the TA was good and the engine had been overhauled within the last two years. Is the TA the transmission? Said he wanted $1200 for the baler. I know very little about balers. Looked clean and that it had been kept in a shed.

I believe TA stood for "Torque Amplifier" which to me sounds like something the sales department came up with. I think is was fluid clutch but I am just not sure.

Not going to address any issue about any Farmall that has a number instead of a letter, but I DO have two 224T balers. One beauty...shedded and running sweet that I paid $900 for a few years back. One not so nice that I paid around $300 for and it is temporarily broke but way down the list of things to fix. $1200 is too high but a good auctioneer will get it around here if the baler is nice.

NO bob you are probably correct.. Farmall 706
there were international 706's but those were standard tread or industrial versions.
the ones the midwestern farms had were Farmall

Doh, I just reread my post and see I called it a Farmall when I should have said IH. Anyway thanks for all the replys. I'm still thinking it over and need to have someone more qualified then myself take a look at them. I would probably try to offer a lot less for a package deal on the both of them. Who knows, its the end of the year, maybe they want to move it off the lot.

I'm not sure what the tractor is worth, but I agree with the others, a lot for the baler. it is a good model, but that's pretty high.

The TA is a high-lo shift on the go option that IHC has. It works well, but does tend to 'go out' or break a lot. It is not all that expensive to rebuild, but it is 'the' weak link on an IHC tractor, so it is most often mentioned. Often times the 'lo' part wears out first, & the 'hi' or straight gear set works fine for years, if you are willing to live without the 'lo'.

When I said shift on the go up above, you understand you put the tractor in a gear with the foot clutch, then you may shift between hi/lo on the go. You can't shift between the standard gears on the go tho, only the hi/lo part is on the go.

Clear as mud..... .

i think $1200 for a used baler is pricey even from a dealer . around here most small baler bring less than $500 unless a collector or 2 want it

They explained more than I know about the TA, I have heard that they are a bear to rebuild but worth it when you are done.
As for the JD 24T, $1,200 is very rich, even for a good one in good conditon ready to bale. You can find them much cheaper. As with any dealer, he paid much less for it. Take your time and find one already in use on a farm.
Dealers are forced to have two prices on used equipment. The low price is when you sell it to them, it ain't worth "nothing". The same unit is worth a lot more when they are selling it.

TA stands for Torque-Amplifer which is what international called there hi-lo shifting device. It is a high/low shift seperate from the other transmission that has a lever to shift any time without using regular clutch.

TA is a Torque Amplifier. Never seen the insides of one but I think it's a planetary gearset that is in-line with the transmission, and when you engage the TA lever it is kind of like shifting down about half a gear, without using the clutch. Basically increases the torque available at the rear wheels. Real handy for when you hit a tough spot in the ground when plowing or disking.

Drove an IH when I was a teen in the summers. The foreman (also a young guy) taught me to shift the TA to low on every turn-around )to slow down a little. The TA did not last long. The owner was not happy with me. I said "HEY, just doing what I was told!!!'

Larry,

I had a similar situation years ago involving a brand new Oliver 1955. I was working for a guy plowing rocky ground. We were pulling 6 18" bottoms with manual resets on them - had to back up to reset the plows. The plows kept tripping, and I'd throttle down to back up. Boss said, "Quit throttling down. Just leave engine running at high RPM when you reset the plows." I did. It took about three days to destroy the clutch. He was mad at me. Go figure.

Yeah, it's not fair, but when a farmer has an expensive tractor, work to do, and something breaks, they have to be mad at someone!!

This guy only had two big tractors and could not have one down during planting season, so we drove it with just High until the winter when it was repaired.
