The "Lost My Load" post made me decide to post this recent episode and the lesson I learned from it.

Over the course of a couple months I have rented a trailer from a well known trailer mfg company to haul my JD 4430 to a mechanic about 25 miles away. The 3rd time I rented the trailer, I had noticed that my electric brake controller was not making a connection to the trailer brakes. I checked this and that...then when I wiggled the plug I got a good connection. This happened a couple of times. Since everything on my truck seemed to be in order and I had never had a problem with my controller or trailer plugs since 1999 when I installed them, I decided there must be a problem with the plug on the trailer...the wires also seemed a little loose going into the plug. When I returned the trailer, I mentioned to the guy who seemed to be in charge of the shop that I suspected that he had a loose wire or something else wrong with the plug on the trailer...and he assured me that he would check it out.

The last time I rented the trailer, I had to make 2 trips to haul 2 tractors. I was bringing my 4430 home as well as a 4450 w/725 loader that I had bought. I was nervous about the 4450 the most since it was larger and much heavier than the 4430. I picked it up and got it home without any problems at all. All systems were a go.

On my trip back to the mechanics to pick up the 4430 with the empty trailer, I was slowing down to make a turn and flipped on my turning signal...and things went crazy. All of a sudden the trailer brakes started pulsing...what felt like full on and full off. I looked in the rearview mirror and saw a huge cloud of blue smoke and pieces of rock chips and possible rubber flying all over the place. I tried applying and releasing the brakes with no avail...the connection light on the electric brake controller kept flashing...so I just came to a complete stop right in my lane. The cars behind me took the burm and went on around me...the on coming cars also took the burm on the other side. Luckily, I was not hit nor did anyone loose control of their vehicles. I jumped out of my truck and unplugged the trailer plug and pulled the whole rig to the side. I was relieved that I did not cause a major accident...and that I was empty at the time...how much worse it could have been if I was loaded.

When I pulled the trailer plug apart later, I found that several of the wires were loose on their terminals...but the worst was that the brake wire was completely pulled off its terminal and resting above the clamp screw...and shifted over touching the right turn signal terminal. Apparently I had hit a bump that jostled the wire over to the turn signal terminal and when I turned on my blinker...it started pulsing the brakes full on and full off.
Someone else who rented the trailer must have pulled away from the trailer and forgot to disconnect the plug...

Lesson learned for me...don't trust someone else to do something...check it yourself.

Several people told me to raise a stink with the rental company and try to get my rental fee refunded...but I didn't...told them what happened and that I had fixed the problem...figured I had enough to be thankful for and let it go at that...

Happy trailering!

Tim

Tim: In my lifetime I've had experience with electric brakes, vacume brakes and air brakes on trailers. I don't like the electric brakes, just too many things can go wrong with them. I found them to be troublesome at best. Once you have experienced either vacume or air brakes you will never look back. Yes, the vacume and air have problems as well, but not near as often as electric. My personal opinion, electric brakes should be banned completely. I know that will never happen, just too many travel and camper trailers out there. We can however decide not to use them for industrial, commercial or farming use.

now you know why he didnt fix it the first time you told him about it. its easier to let you fix it and your too dumb to say anything about it . guess his thinking is correct since it worked.

Tim, Anytime I hook a trailer to my rig I test all lights, as well as brake function. I use the manual over ride as well to test in case of an emergency the the normal brakes to insure that they also work. I own two trailers and never trust that every thing is working since weather can play havoc on the connections too. I am glad that you can through that without any damage or injury. It was a good day for you.

That's just it...I did test everything when I hooked up the trailer and everything worked perfect for the first trip....so...I was convinced whatever had been the problem had been fixed.

To have that happen after a good test would give a guys knees the wobbles! Dang, do they have any idea how it could have come apart after your test? That would be spooky. I have found that it is a good idea to check it when you have been parked and away from your trailer since someone could yank or pull on the wires by accident or just vandalisim. Just to be cautious.

Multiple users & trailers just do not work.. My business partner has a nice 16 ft Hudson bumper-pull trailer... Everyone borrows it, & seem to damage it.. Broken lights, wires pulled loose, jack torn off... Every time hee needs it, he spends an hour or 2 fixing it so he can use it... No one borrows my trailer, No one...

Glad to hear you made it, how much seat cushion was ingested? Surely an agr like you with two tractors can afford a trailer ;-) From a TR at cbm.

Sorry...but don't have a clue in the world who you are...anyways, I don't need a 25K GVW trailer often enough to warrant owning one. But I guess if I did, you would want to borrow it:)

What a crazy thing to happen.Good thing you had presence of mind and were mechanically minded. I had a problem with a 6X10 box trailer I rented last summer. It had surge brakes. It was loaded with about 1200 lbs. of band equipment and I was pulling it with my camper laden 1970 G.M.C. 3/4 Ton.We were on one of the mountainous gulf islands coming slowly down a long curvy hill when I felt the brakes fading away.Shifted into low range{350 auto). No brakes.Motor racing.Corners ahead.Got around corners O.K. Intersection at bottom of hill.Went through-no cars.Short 250ft.level straight stretch with a corner winding downnhill at the end.I hadn't used the brakes since they faded and now I saw my chance.Hit the brakes and managed to ALMOST stop before the next corner/hill so I jerked it into park and somehow it caught with a loud P-i-i-n-g! The upshot was the surge brakes did'nt work-the last renter had tried to back up without locking out the trailer brakes so he cut the brake line beside the backing plate. Oh yeah, around that last corner was one last short steep hill ending suddenly with a wood barricade and a 20 ft. plunge into the ocean.
