Will it hurt to use some furnace fuel in a diesel engine? I have approx 100 gal. in my barrel and I am swithcing to an LP furnace. Can I blend this in with diesel? I use the tractor for light work.
Thanks

True furnace fuel might not have some additives that help lubricate the engine, pump, etc.

In practice, _most_ fuel delivery places use the same exact fuel for both furnace fuel & diesel fuel. It is more expensive to handle 2 seperate fuel delivery lines than the slight difference in prices.

I'd say you will be fine with a bit of a blend or a fuel additive, and if you can ask the place that delivers fuel, you likely have #2 diesle fuel from the start.

According to my Model 70D operators manual #2 fuel is a heavier fuel, with a higher BTU content, and you will get more HP/Hour with this fuel than with #1. So yes, you can use it just fine.

The die is applied from the delivery truck, it must be expensive color ;-) Your tractor won't see a difference, only your wallet...

Wrong - the die is applied at the terminal, and not your fuel suppliers terminal, the terminal where they get it.

The dye is put in to tell the difference between off-road fuel and on-road. Nothing else. Your state may have a tax on house fuel and not on tractor fuel or vice-versa, but the fuel is the same.

Not entirely correct either? Some states used to mandate dye in fuel for off road use that contains higher sulphur than on road fuel. Not sure if there is still a difference now.

Gary

Federal law mandates that high sulpher fuel can not be used for road use. Because of this all high sulpher fuel is dyed red.

Low sulpher fuel may be used for on and off road use. Because of the extra cost of tanks most suppliers only stock low sulpher. It is sold clear (green) for on road use and is injected with red dye at the loading rack for off road (no tax) use.

Red dye only tells you it is no tax (off road) use only. It can be low or high sulpher.

#2 furnace =#2 diesel. #1 furnace =#1 diesel.

He did say tractor use so even the tax man will not care.

Now if he put it in his pickup the tax man would be mad.

I've been using No. 2 high sulfur fuel oil out of my furnace tank in my diesel tractor for years without any problems . It's the same thing, delivered in the same truck but the diesel costs about $.30 per gallon less for some reason. I ask for diesel when I fill my fuel oil tanks.

As far as I know, furnace fuel is #1 diesel. Some people that have basement tanks will run #2, but either way, it's just diesel and is fine in a tractor.

No 1 and No 2 are different fuels. The numbers DO NOT represent a quality difference as they imply. No 1 will not gel as easily and is cleaner burning but has a lot less BTUs. No 2 is the way to go for most people and circumstances.
