I was wondering how hard (or possible) it would be to build a "local" telephone system between the sheds and house. I have about 3000' of underground (and other) phone cable, phones, jacks and other stuff. Not looking for anything fancy, but just something that works. Any ideas?

Great project idea! The nice thing is, you could set it up in your shop with short sections of wire to see if you can get it to work.

Maybe you could find an old Bell Lineman's manual on ebay or at a bookstore? That might give some info on how things worked.

I have an extension phone line in the shop and an intercom for shop-house/house-shop talk. Intercom just plugs in to 110v and no more house to house wire needed. Shop is less than 300 ft from house. It is an inexpensive set up that works just fine.

Aloha, Run the wires off of your main phone to your shed and this will be an extension of your main phone.

Years ago we had one setup between the house and shop like your talking about. If I remember right we pulled a regular 4 wire phone cable from the outside connection to the shop where we hooked just like you would on any other phone. If you picked up a reciever on one end and dialed your own number the reciever on the other end would ring and you could talk to each other over the open line. I haven't tried anything like this in years so I don't know if all the new technology has changed things but it used to work. If you can talk to each other on the open line but the phoning yourself doesn't work anymore try this. Hook up the phone like you normally would, only this time use the extra wires for a low voltage, stand alone, signal bell on each end. Put 12VDC to one of the wires and switch it to a bell at each end. If this still doesn't work you should still be able to use a regular phone and phone wire. You just have to figure out what voltage the phone needs to work and wire everything appropriately. Good luck.

Those intercomm sets that plug into 120 would work great as a alternative (assuming you have 120 between all the buildings).

I think the 3000 feet would introduce too much loss for extending the regular phone line. A pair of 'walky talky' cell phone looking units might be good enough. That way you could keep
one with you and leave the other at home. Could even use it while driving the tractor, of
course only while in the field not on the lane!
(grin) Might be good in an emergency if you ran
out of fuel, food, or drink on a hot day!

Sorry for the misunderstanding! I have 3000' of wire to use, but only need about 150' of it!

Roger Welsch once said if you're going to have a phone in your tractor shop, make sure it doesn't ring. That way you can enjoy your tractors without interruption. Good advice, I think.

Two types of phones will work. Sound powered like the U S Navy uses and the old fashioned magneto phones. The antique phones are rather pricey. Try army surplus for sound powered phones.

Intercom would probably be easier to make work, since it is a lot simpler. To make a local phone system, you have to have a switch of some sort. That is a specialized type of computer.
