With the best minds in world here this site this is the only place to ask a question,so here goes. The power company says I need a new meter base and it has to have a by-pass. What is a by-pass? Are they talking about a breaker box mounted on the meter base or what. The reason for the new base is upgrading from 60amp to 200 amp service. If this little store was 100yd south, the REC would do it for free!

That lever is there for the utility company use to remove any load prior to pulling the meter or vise versa. It is not actually a bypass switch as such. It eliminates the arc produced when installing or removing a meter from the meter socket which can cause personel injury.

Yes, the bypass feature makes contact when the meter is removed. Often the bypass lever makes contact and pushes the meter out of the lugs simultaneously. The bypass lever is inside the meter socket and accessible only after the seal is broken. The requirement for the bypass feature in not in the NEC, but is required by the utility that supplies you. The meter socket will be larger- a thing of real beauty!

The by pass switch is built into the meter can, to the right of where the meter plugs in you will see a leaver with a red handle on the end, all this does is close the cicruit when you remove the meter so the power doesn"t go off when you pull the meter..

Never heard tell of a meter base with a switch that can bypass the meter. Ronk makes a meter base with a double throw and three, four or five pole switch plus a receptacle. This "break before make" switch ensures isolation of the utility side. And connects the distribution side of the service to the receptacle which can have a standby generator plugged into it. To install a new meter base and not use one with a built in generator transfer switch is sheer foolishness. Even if you do not own a generator. And the cost is just a few dollars more. The transfer switch also allows quick isolation of the entire distribution side incase of emergency.

Ya,I have seen one meter can with the meter bypass switch. It would seem for the most part if you have to pull the meter you would not want the power on anyway. I have installed several Ronk switches below the meter can and set them up for a standby generator.
