Measure the barrel outdside dimension and number of tubes and their length I will be able to get you close follow others advice on the engine number plate you can also E-mail me photos if needed. you may also want to get the boiler number off of the rear of the engine depending on the age of the engine it may or may not have it stamped on the right hand side toward the top of the wagon sheet or curve.

If the boiler doesn't have a valid inpection stamp. She's about scrap price if the boiler needs re-working. Is the engine complete? Do you have a boiler ticket or know somebody that does?

You can buy running engines for $10,000 if you shop around.

They are out there worth the money. Make sure you really want steam though. It is not a machine you can park and forget. They can lose their value very quickly in the hands of a neglectful keeper. They are big, awkward, not easily moved and expensive to run (correctly). I will own one someday. I gets in your blood and no way to remove it. Value will fluctuate from near scrap to what ever $ amount a pristine machine and avid collector will agree on. Make sure you have someone that KNOWS his engines when you go buy.

There should be a serial number plate riveted to the front of the boiler, driver's right side. It should have a serial number and HP.

What it's worth highly depends on condition and location.
