Well, I just broke another set of those. I have had Lenscrafters flex frames for many years now and had one of the first sets of them when they came out. Unfortunatly I lost my original frames in the lake while riding with a friend in his high powered speed boat. I had loved my first set, they were wonderful and extremely tough, I never had any problems with them over many years. Lenscrafters told me the new frames had been changed alittle, I asked them in what way, but they told me they couldn't say as that is some big company secret. I think I'm starting to see how they've been changed!, I just broke my 2nd set in less than a year, they both broke the very same spot, right in the bridge across the nose. I also have a complaint about the scratch resistant coating, I always buy the double sided coating, using a clean bath towel to clean them will scratch them all to heck, and I'm not talking about a corse towel either. I took that up with them and was simply informed that I was cleaning them improperly. What happened to Lenscrafters?, I know they used to have excellent glasses, that lens coating really used to work nice and didn't scratch easily. Kinda hesitating taking my buisness back there today, I know they are going to charge me another $200+ for new frames and there is going to be no warranty because they gave me alot of grief before and ended up paying for half the cost.
Now I don't wrench on my glasses like they do in the commercials and never did, but after 6-9 months of regular wear, they snap at the bridge and both times while I was wiping them off. I've had regular glasses that lasted a whole lot longer than these. I've also had to take them back a couple of times to have them readjusted after they'd loosen up, didn't have that problem with the old ones either.

We take our sons to Sears for they have an excellent 2 year warranty and buddy have we ever saved a ton. They know when we walk in they are gonna have to make the promise good, and the Sears tool department is only a few steps away.Check them out if you have a Sears nearby...

You might want to check out CR39 plastic lens with a TD2 scratch-resistant coating. They're lighter than glass and the coating has a 2 year warranty against scratches. If they scratch, the lens are replaced free. As for the frames, I think you should buy the best you can afford. I've had my latest set for about 10 years now and just replace the lens when required. Good luck.

With vision worse than 20/400 for many years, I went for lasik. Took the guy 2 tries to get it right, but I ended up with 20/20 in one eye, 20/15 in the other. Only need drugstore reading glasses & the savings on prescription glasses will pay for the lasik in a couple more years. But the greater benefit is I can see so much better than with any prescription correction. You don't realize until you no longer need glasses that the correction you get is only good near the center, & the worse your vision, the smaller the area of good correction. For anyone considering lasik, I highly recommend it! And if you aren't thinking about it, think again!

buy mine from local eye dr. always used glass until last time. they were heavy. gal was trying to talk me into plastic and i told her that i welded all the time. glass was the only thing that would hold up. she told me that they had a new type plastic that was guaranteed to work. went with them and have not regretted it. bought titanium frames that flex. ran about $400 all together. been three years and have got a new prescription to fill and will use same frames again.

These were titanium "Flexon by Marchon" frames. Tried to get them soldered today, but because they are titanium, I was told it wouldn't hold, so the folks at Lenscrafters did let me have a replacement frame (the same exact thing) for $100, so thats what I did (yeah I was really surprised they gave me any warranty, but I didn't get the manager with the bad personality this time). We'll see how long these will last, hopefully 3rd time is a charm!.

The last pair I had were the titanium frames, loved them, nice and light. I wore them a couple years and my RX changed so got new varliux lenses made to go in them. They lasted a couple months and broke at the nose bridge. They told me titanium has to be worked in a vaccuum? I got a pair from jc penney, close to $400 and don't like them and won't wear them. Luckily a small place at the mall fit my expensive varilux lenses into a pair made from inconel for a reasonable price. I like the dr at penneys but not their prices. Lenscrafters wants to rush you too much and their prices aren't too keen either. I got my last exam at walmart for work glasses, but they don't have too much of a frame selection. Probably go back to the small place at the mall next time since they treated me right. DK

Best thing I ever did was spend $1000 and got my eyes lasered. I had glasses since I was 6. Terrible vision. Now when I go hunting, my buddies wonder how I can see the stuff I do - they can't.

2nd worst thing I ever did: After I got my lasik, I thought this is the greatest thing in the world. I'm going to invest in this company. I only put in $1000. They went bankrupt.

Worst thing I ever did was a week before they went bankrupt, I got an offer from their competitor to buy their stock - an exchange deal, stock for stock. I would have come out a couple hundred bucks up, but no, I thought IF they want them, they must REALLY be going to go up!

Yeah I'm going to look into that. I think I might be a candidate because my prescription hasn't changed over the years.

I've worn glasses since I was 12 and wish I could go the laser route, but they turned me down because of a trygium (sp?) on my left eye. Basically it's a benign harmless fatty growth on the surface of my eye. It causes no problems unless it grows over the pupil, but it disqualifies me for laser vision correction. Rats!

As for investing, well if there's a company I like, I make it a point NOT to invest in that company because it would be the kiss of death!

If there's a company you really don't like, send me $2,000. I'll invest $1,000 of it in the company you want to punish and keep the other $1,000 as my fee to cover the first $1,000 that will be lost when they go broke!

Sorry to hear about your eyes. It's truly a miracle. I stayed on the 7th floor of a hotel in Winnepeg when I had it done. After my nap I could read license plates on the cabs on the street below (although it was like looking through a fog). 3 hours earlier I couldn't read an alarm clock across the room. The next day I drove us out of the city as my wife isn't comfortable driving in that much traffic. ...
I ONLY invest in companies that I like/own some item of theirs. I feel that if it has made me a satisfied customer, it makes others as well. I make a point of not investing in companies that pi$$ me off and will sell stock if they do. WalMart will never see a penny of mine. Ok, maybe that's not so smart. But also when my broker was pushing Worldcom, I told him no way because of dealings I've had with them. Saved me big.

For the most part, my buy and hold what I like and to hell with the rest has worked very well with a few exceptions, this one being the most noticable.

You eyes sound like mine, I can't read an alarm clock across the room without my glasses either, just a big blur, everything is fuzzy unless it's real close up. So I take it you had your lazer surgery done in Canada?.

Yes sir. At the time it was less than half the price of down in the states, plus the doctors had a lot more experience. I think it was close to $3k in the states at the time.

The doc that did mine had over 10,000 of these procedures at that time. He was doing 20 a day.

It's close to $3,000 here. I understand the procedure takes only about 15 minutes and they don't have to knock you out or anything.

Thats true - But it is a 3 day deal. 1 day just for consultations and mapping your eyes, etc. They are extremely thorough. 2nd day pre-exam, more consultations and surgery. 3rd day post exam.

The reason Canada is so much cheaper has nothing to do with short cuts or anything like that. It's has to do with the machines themselves. Even though they use the same machines, the royalties that we pay for their use in the states is much higher than what they pay in Canada.

I would recommend going north to have it done. If Winnepeg is your destination, I'll give you a recommendation to the doc that did mine.

Winnipeg is way too far away for me, but I do live just a few miles away from Quebec Canada. I probably will get it done within the next year or two. Lots of folks around here like to go get their dentures from Canada too. I know malpractice insurance is what really drives up the prices here in the states.

Canada has actual 'denturists' - that is all they do. My dad searched for years before finding a guy up north that could do it right and at a third the price to boot.

I had trouble with new glases from Lenscrafters also. I got a new pair for $350. and six weeks later I had a change in my vision and eye doctor said I needed a new lens in the frame cause of the vision change . I went back to Lenscrafters and they said it would cost $150 to change just one lens I said forget it! My eye doctor also sells frames and glasses. so I asked him if he could put a new lens in my Lenscrafters frames and he said sure. His cost to replace just the one lens was only $40. I'LL NEVER give Lenscrafters any more bisness thats it for me!!!!

I'm really not sure they even offer glass lenses at Lenscrafters. I think these are $220 each for just the frame if I remeber right, so they are not cheap and I believe they are the best Lenscrafters has to offer.

This eyeglass stuff is a rip off ! Eye doctors want $200 and up and you can get glasses off the internet for around $20 I took a chance last year and ordered a set from Zeni Optical out of California. Best money I ever spent on glasses. Bought the cheapset pair they sell and so far they have out lasted the more expensive ones.I figured I could always buy 10 pair a year, but so far the first ones have made it about a year.

Just like everything these days, make it cheaper to increase profits, at the expense of the consumer. Quality is a thing of the past.
