The photo spotlight today features a 1964 B414 owned by Shawn-MN. I've heard of a B52, but what's a B414? Glenn F.

If the glowplug heating system is working properly they will always start. Minus 6 here in lincolnshire UK this morning and both my B250 and 444 tractors started ok after 60 seconds of heat both tractors were outside. Roy were in the UK are you. Did you go to the big tractor show at Newark last week. MJ

My dad bought one in the early seventies. A good loader tractor though lacking power steering, it had a very strong hydraulic pump and an automatic leveling function on the loader as well as downforce. This proved useful for landscaping. It had a locking differential, as well.

The diesel engine was extremely hard to start when cold. My dad kept it plugged in to a recirculating heater all winter. Even in warm water it would need a long preheat.

I remember the clutch going out of it suddenly while running a baler one summer afternoon. It cost $2600 CDN to repair by the time the tractor was back on the farm.

I wouldn't mind having the 414 again just for use with a loader. For everything else (especially starting) I much prefer my Massey Ferguson 35 diesel.

The B. International were noted for been lousy starters over here let alone in a Canadian winter! We had a Super BMD then a B.450, both had oodles of torque but they were both very poor starters. In later years IH abandoned the awful glowplug starting system in favour of the thermostart and shorter stroke engines. Yes that made them easier to start, but they did not pull nearly as well as the old long stroke sloggers.

I had one years ago and it was the worst tractor I have ever driven, let alone owned. A friend of mine had one and he thinks it was one of his best. Mine wouldn't start worth a hoot, was extremely uncomfortable to drive and didn't turn for beans. Put me off IH for years. Still very wary of them.

I always took the B for "British-made". I know a seasoned hay farmer that has had a B414 since new. It now has 6000+ hours and is still truckin'. I get the impression that they're more common north of the border.

Hello Jason see that you are up in God's country. I am in michigan but fish up 100 miles north of the village of Pickle Lake. It is a 1068 mile trip one way for us to travel.
Just love the country up there--more bears than people and the fishing is--well if you live up there you know or have heard of what it is.

Mahindra still making them in reply to Glenn FitzGerald, 11-17-2005 20:09:20
It's more-or-less a British and Indian designed tractor and a close equivalent can be bought today, new, from the same Indian company - i.e. Mahindra. The B-250 started out in England and then on to India with the B-275. In 1963, M&M (Mahindra & Mahindra) formed a joint venture with International Harvester to manufacture tractors carrying the Mahindra nameplate for the Indian market and IH for others. First of the series, I believe, was the B-275 that used a 144 diesel engine (also a gas). The IH B-414 used a slightly larger 154 diesel engine and is still the basis for some current Mahindra models. For example, The current Mahindra E40-DI has a modern three cylinder 115 cu in diesel engine. Everything else is almost identical to a
B-275-414 including manual steering and a 8.3 gpm hydraulic pump, except it has a single clutch. It is rated 39 engine HP @ 2450 rpm and 31 pto hp. The C4005-DI has the 144 cu in four cylinder diesel that was introduced in the B-275 and
hydrostatic power steering that was first offered in the 424 and the dual clutch to give live pto. It also has the 8.3 gpm hydraulic pump. It is rated 39.5 engine HP @ 2300 rpm and 31.5 pto hp. The C4505-DI has the 154 cu in diesel that was introduced in the B-414 and also has hydrostatic power steering and dual clutch. It has 8.3 gpm hydraulic pump. It is rated 43 engine HP @ 2300 rpm and 34.5 pto hp. All of the gearing on these three models, pto, etc, is of the same design as the 275, 414,
424, 444 line of tractors. All of the sheet metal, according to Mahindra, with the exception of the fenders and ROPS is also the same as the older IHC tractors and a large portion of the parts will fit the older IHC tractors.

International had Mahindra making quite a few of their tractor models as noted above. International built the plant with Mahindra and They had to sell their interest in the plant and tractor models when they merged with Case to avoid U.S. Monoply laws. Mahindra bought International"s interest and then continued making the tractors for International as a manufacturing contractor..By Having to buy the models from India, they avoided anti-trust laws...then they ended their association when Case International started making comparable tractors. Mahindra continued making tractors and selling them as their own models both in the US and elsewhere.

'B' in the model is British. Doncaster made IHC, Some imported direct to USA, others to Canada. Minor variations of US models to some things more toward British uses- some had 3 point hitches, some Lucas eletricals, metric nuts and bolts some. RN

It is an IHC Utility tractor; about a 3 plow tractor size. There were 2 in my neighbourhood when I was a kid. Both were Diesel models.
