What are some of the better/more reliable 4wd articulated tractors from the 70s and 80s? I"m looking for one to put a blade and and do some light clearing and other misc. work. Price range?

My vote is a massey 4840, very good machine. it seems to me you would be better off contracting off the clearing. Lots of people will even do it for free for any wood. An articulated 4wd is gonna cost a few $, much more if you break something. Buy an older Oliver 1850 or bigger with duals and MFW. Should do anything you want it to and boy can they push or pull things.Price $4500-$10000. But if money is no option get what ever turns ya on.

You would be better off to buy a small dozer for land clearing , I have watched to many come into the shop I used to live near with the front ends and trannys destroyed bacause the guys thought they had a D-6 cat .

If you're going to put a blade on it, there was a Versatile 300 Hydro-Mech in the classifieds a few days ago. That would be excellent for a blade. They operate in either hydrostatic mode or hydro-mechanical. Totally variable speed and no shifting between forward and reverse.

Folks around here like to pick up a green Stieger for $5-8,000 and rebuild it. All the parts seem to come from any generic source, can rebuild over &over..... .

Old Case had the interesting crab steer, some folks liked that.

Versitle is about like a Stieger, rebuildable for cheap.

As much as I know about it. Which isn't much.

just to add to what Paul said, look for a Steiger or Versatile with the 6 cyl Cummins or Cat engine. The V8 models can be had cheaper, but are not as reliable and more expensive to repair. You get what you pay for.

Agreed- Steiger and Versatile used a lot of easily available truck parts, Cummins engines, although I would stay away from the 555 V8. In-line six is more dependable. Cat 3208- some call throw-away- that usually brings some negative response calling it that, but it gets its power from high rpm which destroys engines. Better to stick with a simple, low rpm dependable power unit, simple hydraulics, etc. Had a Case 2470 for years, 504 engine went bad and I put an 855 Cummins in it-= took a lot of reworking with a special adapter plate, but well worth it. Tremendous lugging ability. Why do so many current mfgrs go with Cummins now? Same with retro fit- Cummins has kits for their B/C series going into Oliver, JD, etc.

What about the v-6 cummins in the Versatile 300?

Is it a good engine?

The V6 was not a great engine, about the same as the little Cummins V8's. The cummins inline 855 CU inch 6 is the best, powerfull, reliable and cheap to overhaul at 10,000 + hrs. I have little experience with the Versatile 300 except that others have stated that the hydrostatic drive was not at all reliable. The old Versatile manual trans/dropbox used in the other models was very strong/reliable.

I think I might like to differ with you a little on the reliability of the hydrostatic drive in the Versatile 300. To my knowledge they were very reliable. I have one of these tractors and have a blade on it. I have talked to several owners and former owners of these machines and no-one has said there was any problem with the hydrostatic drive. As a matter of fact several commented that they had not had any trouble with the hydrostat. I would have to agree with you that the V6 (or V8) engine is not as good as an inline 6 but I don't think they were exactly big trouble. I think that if this man was to buy one and the engine is good now, it will last him fine for all he is doing with it. On the other hand, in agreement with some of the other posts perhaps Jody should decide if an articulated 4WD is what he wants as there are options in some of the larger 2WD and FWA tractors.
