Our local S.E Indiana tractor club, has voted after much discussion, to go from a 3 day Show, Fri, Sat, & Sun, to a 2 day Show, just Fri & Sat. Sunday was slim in attendance and in exhibitors. Any thoughts??

Attendance is always slim on the last day of any show. The reason, in my opinion, is because way too many of the exhibitors start pulling out early on the last day. Right now attendance is slim on Sunday, because it is the last day. If the last day is on Saturday, guess what? Attendance will be slim then also. The solution is to require the exhibitors to stay until the last hour of the last day.

Are you competing against some other attraction or show on saturday or sunday? Are you having a labor problem because of lack of local interest? Running a successful show involves a major public relations push to get people to come and lend a hand. Most of the time the major work that goes in to a show happens on the week or two prior to the show and then the first two days of the show. The third day should coast along by itself if the load has been spread out among enough workers so they aren't burned out even before the show starts. I know moving show dates is tough to do without stepping on someone else's toes but it might be worth a try. A two day tractor pull might help if you can keep the sled over another day without paying for the second day. Our show is three days(fri-sun) and sunday is the second biggest day and friday is the smallest. We saw a drop in attendance when the state fair decided to move to the same time we have our show. It's 150 miles away but it still had some affect on us. This year the attendance was a little low, but every show we know of had the same problem. We don't know if it was the price of gas or what? Oh yes, we are in NW Iowa.Jim

We are planning a show to and going thru the same thing. Personally I think no matter how much you have planned that the people who have to travel any distance will leave early on sunday. Most on them have to work on monday and would like to get homw to unwind. Same goes for thursday. With fuel prices as they are it just plane hurt alot of shows this year.

Here's a suggestion. If your crowds are thin on SUnday, then plan more things to do on Sunday that would want them to stay. If you do a tractor pull, hold a class or two on Sunday afternoon. One show that I attended went so far as to hold their grand finale parade at 5 PM on Sunday, and if you won a class in the tractor pull, and you wanted your trophy / prize money, you had to parade the tractor during that parade, and you got your prize in front of the announcer's stand.

Our show is mid-September, and even with $3 gas & diesel, our overall attendance was up this year, Saturday is by FAR the biggest day, Friday is second, Sunday a distant third. Exhibitors were down just a little. We have an Antique tractor pull Friday evening, & Garden tractor pull Sat. evening, both well attended. We have a lot of working demonstrations going on all weekend. Many exhibitors & outside vendors pull out Saturday night. Sunday has been frustrating, working all day with very few people there! Our "pulling groups" have not been available for Sunday events. I appreciate the input. Thanks!
