Tim, I smoked for 33 years a good part of that 2 packs a day. I quit Jan 10, 1990, I had the worst cold I had ever had in my life. I was dairy farming at the time 3 days into the cold I got up got out a new pack, looked at it for a while then put it in my pocket unopened. Late in the morning I took it out to open it, and was standing next to a guy who lit one I got a whiff and put it back in my pocket. I carried the pack 3 days unopened. The big secret to quiting is you have to want to quit. Almost 16 years later I don"t even think about it.

My wife made me a deal. If I quit, I got to buy any new car or truck I wanted. If I started again, I had to sell it. ou usually trade in for a new vehicle so it was drive a new truck and not smoke or walk and smoke. I put 153k on that Nissan pickup. If you fall down just get up again. You don't get great at anything the first try. So just keep trying. GWB

I quit last Feb. after a bad cold. Got sick of them after 28 years. Quit a few times before but thought I could just have one every now and then. Next thing you know, right back at them. The weight went up about 35 lbs(275) but it"s starting to go back down the last few weeks. Took a few months but I feel better than I have in a while. I found the beer goes down better and you don"t have as wicked a hangover which is a bonus for me, the missus doesn"t see that though. Good luck

All of these folks are correct in their statements that it is not easy to quit but it is possible. I smoked for more than 45 years and always tried to limit my addiction to a pack a day. Nicotine is not just a habit but a powerful addiction similar to many other drugs. At the urging of a heart attack, I quit almost three years back and it was not easy. I don’t cough any more, don’t have to rush outside from a meeting or other functions to smoke and I feel better. Food has always tasted good to me and I cannot state that it is better since I quit. I believe cold turkey is the best way to quit as I have seen many folks use the gum, patches, smokeless tobacco, chewing tobacco, cigars and other methods which I believe kept them hooked on the nicotine and perpetuated the urge. I believe if you use the gum, etc., you have simply changed your method of intake and are still feeding that powerful urge for nicotine. The first few weeks will be tough and I don’t believe a smoker ever completely looses the craving for tobacco but it is nothing more than a passing thought for me now. I do not foresee the possibility of smoking again. I also do not believe that I am going to live forever if I don’t smell cigarette smoke again. I do not believe that second hand smoke is so harmful that a smoker must be 50 feet from a doorway to make the politically correct folks feel superior. I do believe it is possible for second hand smoke to be harmful to other folks in a confined area.
Hang in there Tim and I bet you can do it.
Good luck.
Jim

Good luck, I''ve been trying to quit for 33 years. Buried Mom and Dad 4 1/4 years ago. Today was Dad's birthday. Mom was lung cancer, Dad was COPD. Dad's last nurse (a non-smoker) gave me a dressing down one day that would have made any drill sargent proud. I asked here if she had children, she replied yes. I stated that I also have children and I think it's great! Easiest think I ever did! She must suspect quitting smoking is just as easy.

I smoked for thirty years---untill three weeks ago. I was working on top of the combine repairing the return elevator. i needed another wrench so I was climbing down to get it when I slipped on the slick tin and fell to the ground. I landed on my left side. The pain was terrible. After a trip to the hospital and x-rays and a CAT scan i was told I had three broken ribs and a punctured lung. The doc said that if I did not quit smoking , I would not be here in ten years. I was so sore I could not smoke. that day was my last cig. I quit cold turkey. I have not had one for 23 days and don"t even have the urge. If every smoker had a severe blow to the ribs, there would soon be very few smokers left in the world.

Here is the sure fire way to kick em. Everyone that stops has tried several times before making it over the hump and knows how hard it is. Get up in the morning and don't have that first smoke. Then by ten you are climbing the walls but just think of the hell the first couple of hours were and how you don't want to have to go through it again. Do this for a week and things will start improving. If you screw up and have a puff don't get disgusted and smoke the whole pack just put it out and countinue on. One puff dosen make you into a smoker but a succession of them does. I stopped 39 years ago. I had to avoid beer for the first couple of years cause wasn't nuttin better than a cold one and a smoke back then.
Hang in there!

July 1 2002 was the last time I smoked, until then 1-2 packs a day for 20+ years. Menthol's were my favorite. My 2 year old son was my inspiration, outside playing and I thought he was busy for a few minutes so I eased over and was lighting one and as I did I glanced at him and he had stopped digging in his dirt pile and was just staring at me. I knew right then I had to quit. I tried and couldn't do "cold turkey". Used the gum, store brand at Wal-mart, tastes like crap but so did cigs. Chewed it for over a year and then weaned off by switching to regular sugar-free gum. Now I have a fleeting craving ever now and then, but it is gone so fast I don't have to worry about it. PS: I had "quit" a hundred times before so don't give up if you don't make it this time. best wishes.

Quit myself about 7 years ago. Best tip I can give is this. When you were smoking you were most likely taking deep breaths or hits. When you quit smoking you most likely quit doing this. Taking deep breaths relaxes you therefor smoking relaxes you. Keep taking deep breaths to make you relaxe and enjoy your life without smokes!

2 weeks
1 month
6 months
1 year
I bought a shotgun and the last thing I bought was a new truck. After buying that new truck I better not smoke any more the rest of my life!

Tim,
I guess you pretty much heard it all. I smoked close to 40 years now. Smoked three and a half packs a day up till three years ago. I got hooked on Kool Mentals when I was over seas was hard to find regular cigarettes in the PX.

I had a heart attack and had bypass surgery done
plus a bunch of other goodies done also. I spent 3 1/2 weeks in the hospital most of it I don"t even remember. They had me doped up so bad.

I had a couple of cravings when I got home from the hospital, but shrugged it off. I think when someone talks about cigarettes and tells you should quit - to me that makes it harder to quit.

I just don"t think about at all. I have some friends that smoke and they light one up in front of me when were standing there talking. I was surprized that it didn"t bother me as much as I thought it would.
You have a lot of good suggestions out there today. I chew a lot of gum now it helps! Like the one gentalman said your food starts to tasting better and ya develope another problem -(weight).
The main thing is quit before its to late.

I for one can say the good lord gave me a secound chance so far I haven"t had one. It is easyer said than done.

Are you the Tim that put the post of the Golden Years in the tractor form? If-n it was It fits me to the Tee!!!!! (LOL)
I have a question I might post later. Hopefully
I get an answer.
Good luck stick with it! Doesn"t cost anything to try.
Mike

Good luck and don't try to quit forever, Just one Day at a Time.

I quit over 10 years ago this time, 3 packs of Camels a day. Hardest part for me was 1st day, 1st week, 1st month and 1st year. Once I whipped each one of those, it was a walk in the park. The day I quit , just threw everything away and stayed away from anyone that smoked for one week and kept busy. You have to be ready to do it for yourself!!!Good luck..we all know that you can DO IT !!!

Tim - Smoked for 20+ years. I watched both Grandparents die from lung cancer. Grandad smoked, but Grandmother never did. I was in both hospita rooms when they died (several years apart). I decided that I was not going to make my son come and stand by my hospital bed and watch me die a slow death from lung cancer simply because I couldn't stop a habit. And trust me, it's just a habit. If your mind is made up, you will never smoke again. If you go into it "hoping you can quit", you have probably already lost the battle. Good luck, and never take the first drag, and you will never smoke again. Bob

The third day is the worse. make it thru that and it slowly gets better. It took me three times trying to quit. 15 years without now. The real trick to stay clean is to NEVER light up "just one" Thats all it takes. That's all it took in the first place.

The best to you.

I quit cold-turkey on 2/4/84. Most people substitute food for smokes and gain weight. I chewed on the plastic stirring stick from my morning cup of coffee, tooth picks, etc. The first 2-3 weeks are the worst; then the cravings gradually diminish. Good luck, it"s worth the effort.

I quit "cold turkey" in 1975. I don't believe that they had "the patch" way back then! It was probably the hardest thing that I ever tried to do, but I DID IT! Just takes determination and lots of will power. You got my support. Just hang in there, it gets easier after a couple of weeks!

I used the gum. If you chew it like regular gum, it will give a quick and potent dose of nicotine. Made my head spin. I later read the instructions (duh) and they more or less said to use it like snuff between cheek and gums. When I had a real craving (AND YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE THE CRAVING) I would chew hard for a while then snuff 'till it went away. It's 100% between your ears. Make up your mind, you won't be sorry.

My daughter smoked for a few years and it took her a few years to quit. You need to figure out what were your smoking triggers and avoid them. If you drink, stop or slow down, and avoid bars. You have to get away from the smoke smell and get it away from you. Clean the shop, clean the house, wash all your clothes, have the car/s and truck/s cleaned and deodorized.

If you smoked a lot, you may need medication (Welbutrin). The patches and nicotine pills don"t work very well because the nicotine in a cigarette hits you so much faster than the pills or patches can, and the patches can give you serious bad dreams.

Wife and I quit smoking 32 yrs ago after smoking for 20 yrs. Consider yourself a Nonsmoker and get rid of all ashtrays in your home. Clean the ashtray in your vehicles and put an air freshner in. The things you always did as you smoked find other things to occupy you. Listen to the radio a lot and keep your mind occupied on other things. When you make it three weeks you will be over the hump and the urge will get less and less each day. There will be times that your habit will surface it`s ugly head when you least expect it. That will be a fleeting thought then you can go on with out a smoke. Still after all these years I can smell cigarette smoke on a rainy day and I will get the urge but just ignore it. When I quit they had just reached 65 cents a pack. At 2 to 3 packs a day just look at the spending power I have had all these years. That is a chunk of change.

Tim,
You don"t need luck, you just need the determination and will-power, along with all the support you can muster. Try not to be tempted by "just the one" as that is likely the END.
I have never smoked, but a long time ago a friend packed in and put all the money he would have spent, into an old baccy tin. Still does it (now at todays prices); pays for a holiday twice a year!
Not a lot of help, but my brother had a heart attack just 3 months after he had stopped smoking. He said it should not have happened as he had given up! I said he was lucky he had, or he may not have been here now.
Don"t know how many you were smoking a day, or how long you HAD been smoking, but best wishes in your "new life". Yes, you will taste your food, your clothes and breath will smell much sweeter, your life will likely be considerably lengthened, and someone else will be paying those taxes you were paying (presumably) on all that ash.
Keep it up and let us know how you are progressing.
Best regards, RAB

Tim,
I quit about 5 years ago, used the Nicotin patches, was not the easiest thing I ever did. Best thign to have is a positive mental attitutude. This will take you farther than anything to help you get through this. I also still had a wife and children when I got through smoking, I thought a couple of times I would not, but she stuck with me hrough it. Family support goes a lot to help with this.

I have never been a smoker so perhaps you should disregard my input, but as with stopping any old habit, study your behavior and change as many of the old patterns as you can. Try to replace those situations with positive alternatives. Get rid of anything which will make it easy to slip back into the old habit. I understand nicotine is about the most addictive substance known to man so I probably can't relate, but hang in there. If you fall on your face, pick yourself up and try again. We ALL have vices we struggle with so I don't think you should be expecting any stones thrown your way. Friends tell me their quiting smoking was the best/hardest thing they ever did. For what it's worth, you have my support. Glenn F.

Heck Tim, quitting is easy. I did it 15 or 20 times. Staying off is the tough part. But after about 30 years on and off, and after the stroke, the doctor made it real easy for me. He said smoke and die, and also I won't treat you anymore, cause I won't waste my time if you don't want to help yourself. Tough Love I guess. Just look at it this way. You are stronger then they are, and YOU ARE GOING TO BEAT THIS. You got to, cause sooner or later, probably sooner, they will get you, and you owe it to your loved ones to be there for them. Enough of my ranting, but you can do it, you just gotta want to bad enough, luck to you, Harley
