I have this JD4010 with a loader that has been an absolute money pit the last 18 months and over the summer has developed a thirst for oil at a rate of about a quart every 2 hours at approx. 1500rpm. I have worked on everything but the engine and now that seems next. I don"t need the loader because I have a newer JD with a loader, MFWD and cab. I have found a good shape MF1105 and can trade in the 4010 and get the MF for about $4000. The MF is about 20 more horsepower and 15 year newer. Trying to think why this isn"t a good idea. We had MF tractors on the farm when I was a kid.

Anybody know any strong reasons why it isn"t time to stop bleeding money on the 4010?

Tell ya what, we got bunch of masseys and among them we got an 1105. It's got 8500 hours on the original motor and is still running strong everyday of the year twice a day. about the only problem was that we had to put a clutch in at 8000 hours but thats dam good for a clutch.

Having grown up on green tractors and recently buying a massey 1130 I would be the first to say the massey's are very underated tractors. Although the deal your talking sounds shakey. Green paint has good resale value junk or in good shape it dosn't matter. I looked on the internet and found 1105's go for about $6000 and up. You should ask some massey owners(see massey forum) on what to look for in buying a used MF so you don't end up with another money pit.

Looks like a trip to Overhaul City for the Deere, and a ticket for that trip will run a few grand, so I'd go for the deal with the Massey as long as the Massey is in good shape. You'd spend more than that to overhaul the Deere. Massies are great tractors, and the 1105 has the dry-sleeve Perkins which is one of the best tractor engines out there.

I agree with KYhayman. The $4000 difference is too much. The dealer is figuring on making a profit on selling the Massey and your 4010, which is why the difference is so high. If you privately sell the 4010 and buy the Massey cash you will be money ahead.

One thing to consider. You know your tractor and what problems it has. You don't know what problems the Massey MAY have. It may have none or it may be another money pit. It sounds like time for an overhaul is due on the 4010. $4000 goes a long way towards that overhaul. With a fresh engine the 4010 would/should run strong for a long time.

My two cents

John

I'd check on the price of buying the MAssey outright and selling the Deere. If nothing else, try running the Deere in a consignment sale with at least that much reserve. Nothing wrong with making that trade, just seems like you arent getting enough for your 4010.
