I have an H and M that the gas caps leak when the tank is near full. I am a member of an old tractor club and they told me I could get new caps free of charge that are vented to stop the leaking. I did so and now the gas leaks out even worse. I have inspected the rim where the seal of the cap sets on and can find no blemishes or distortions . What in the world is wrong here. I hate having the gas running out over the tank all the time.

I had a 706 gas years ago that didn't leak then I got the new safety cap and it leaked. The "improved" cap is vented in such a way as to allow vapors to escape. I think the old cap let air in but not out.

The cap itself is the same old triple baffle cap IHC used for 20-30 years. I think IHC started using them on the Super Letter series in the mid-50's or just before. The change was in the second latch or catch to prevent the cap from being removed without a second quarter turn to relieve pressure just like on a radiator pressure cap. I have to chuckle now that these new caps are not sealing. Maybe now people will stop ordering them! Only fill Your gas tank half full and forget about it. And it's NOT a problem on diesel's at all.

Take that new cap and do one of two things, install a thicker rubber steal or slightly bend the tabs that go under tank opening rim. Your tank is worn on bottom side of the rim of fill opening. I have one tractor like this. Of my 3 tractors it is the one with a lot of hours, thus I suspect cap was on and off many more times than other two.

You may want to lift up that new cap and drive a green tractor under it. That'll probably stop the leak.

By Golly --you gave me an idea , I will take a cap off of one of the green ones and put on there and see if that works,

Aloha, Is it leaking from the vent? If you fill the tank almost to the top, some will escape from the vent because of the pressure built up when the gas expands.

I suspect that its not leaking from the cap at all but, from where the neck attachs to the tank.
Why are you filling it that full anyway. Apparently this isn't a work tractor. Forget the problem...

Well, If you have a new gas cap with a new seal on it and it fits right I wouldn't think it could leak ,unless the tank has a blemish
