Ford 3610 - Assisted Steering Question

I have been offered a Ford 3610, 2 wheel drive, diesel, 1982 / 1983, with 4170 hours and the clutch replaced at 3600 hours. My biggest concern is that he says, "It does not have power steering , but it has rockshaft assist which eases steering at higher speeds." Is this adequate for this tractor? I have driven old tractors without power steering that were a real bear to drive, but I am not familiar with assisted steering. Was assisted steering usual for a Ford 3610? And, what is a fair price if it is mechanically sound but the paint is in fair condition at best? Thanks!! Bruce (sthornto@nvinet.com)

If you can drive it, see how it steers. If you can steer it easily while it isn't moving, then it has some form of powersteering. Look on the left side of the engine (facing the direction the tractor is) and see if there is a resavoir and pump mounted at the front of the engine where the timing gears are. If so, that would be for the power steering of some sort. It may be a tractor that has a motor and steering box right in the front connected directly to the steering wheel (I guess it would be power assisted rack and pinion?). The major thing is wheter you can steer it without too much effort, if so, don't worry about the powersteering very much. Good luck

That's a pretty late model tractor not to have power steering. I have a '82 4610 and it certainly has it. I have never heard of "rockshaft assist" for steering, but I learn something new every day. (The rockshaft is the large rotating shaft that raises the lift arms.) The 10 Series Fords are good tractors (I supposed I'm biased since I own one.)I have the complete set of Factory Manuals for the 10 Series and I can find nothing refering to rockshaft assist, however there are parts in the steering box called "rocker shafts". In looking at the manual further, I have found a Power Assisted Steering section which uses hydraulic cylinders on the drop arm to provide assist. This may be what the owner is referring to.
Regarding pricing, I would suggest that you search the web for pricing references and publications to help you in that regard.

It is a great tractor. That tractor should give you years upon years of service. While in high school and college, until this past summer, I worked at a New Holland (ford) dealership in the parts department. This past summer I was fortunate to intern for CNH. The Ford tractors from the 70's until '93 were awesome. Rock solid tractors, easy to repair, with each tractor designed similar to the other. Parts are readily available and the tractor is simple to fix.
Steering. I am not familar with the "assisted steering" that he spoke about. The tractors with manual steering were actually fairly easy to steer especially if you have something on the three point such as a bale of hay or a shredder. Just don't try to steer before you have the tractor moving. That is when it gets hard. If you want to know the month, day, year and shift, email me everything on the metal tag that is under the hood. I think its the unit number. It has letters and numbers and should end in an a or b.
If you have any other questions, just email me.
