Two problems with my high-mileage Ranger that exhibited strange symptoms were due to the following: (1) The plate in the distributor that turned to advance the magnetic sensor had worn suspension and when pulled by the vacuum actuator it cocked side ways changing the tangent angle to the cam. (2) Vacuum leak on intake manifold. That is an easy one to check for.

I had 86 ranger 2.9 acted exactly like that. Miss and sputter at speed but ok at idle. Dealer replaced the o2 sensor and some wiring. After three visits, $500 and no fix I gave up on the dealer. I decided to start changing sensors myself. The problem was the air temp sensor in the intake. On mine it's located on the right side(passenger) of the intake manifold. Fixed it right up for about $20. Glad it was the first one I changed.

some more thoughts in reply to onefarmer, 11-10-2005 08:08:50
PS Mine didn't show any codes either. I had the 2.9 AT. 300,000 miles

Are you sure it is flooding? What is it doing? Is it blowing black smoke?

That is what mine was doing. My problem was I couldn't see the smoke until someone I knew followed me and mentioned it.

If you think of the things that could effect fuel mixture without throwing codes, these are the things to look for. In my case the air charge sensor was to culprit. Could be o2 sensors, throttle position, water temp sensor, thermostat not warming the engine to temp.

Seen clogged catalytic converters and collapsed lower air-box intakes on these trucks. Is it smoking black? Are you sure it's flooding , and not running out of fuel? How is your fuel volume?Older injected vehicles burning E-85 will act like this if put in by mistake.~brad
