Help. I have a Case 800 tractor that I aquired a couple months ago. It sat about 6 months was run and sat for another 6 months. When I went to start it, the carb flooded and gas was leakingout between the air inlet and the carb body. I figured it was the float sticking so I bought a "kit" at Napa and cleaned and "rebuilt" the carb. The carb is a Marvel-Schebler TSX7?? model. I put things back together and turned on the gas no leaks but over night the carb started to leak again. It"s almost leaking worse than before and looks like gas is leaking from the slot shaped hole near the air inlet and is filling up the inlet area. Next. I was able to get the carb dryed out and put gas in the tank and got it to start (before it flooded) and run for about 3-5 minutes then it died. I was able to get it to start again but can only get it to run for about 30-60 seconds before it would quit. I tried ajusting the carb needle valve between tries with no improvement. What could be wrong here? THANKS for the help!!!!!

Heres a little trick that might help you. Open the carb back up pull the float out again drop the needle valve in the seat and tap on it a couple times. Doing so sort of sets the tip and your problem will probably go bye bye. I learned that from an old carb man, but hes dead now so I'll not be learning any more tricks from him.

Just went through that same problem. turned out the problem was that carb vent to atmosphere was blocked. As soon as that was opened, flooding problem stopped.

As the fuel flow in, air must be able to flow out. If air can't get out, she floods. So poke around again and make sure no little passages are blocked with crud, or covered up by the gasket from the kit (it may not be exactly the same as original).

THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP/ADVISE! Rick, where is this "air vent" located on a Marvel-Schebler carb? Thanks again.

The air vent is an internal drilled passage with one end in the fuel bowl and the other end just ahead of the choke. If that hole is plugged and you choke the engine, you get pretty much full manifold vacuum on the main fuel nozzle & idle hole and can flood the engine with fuel. The ituation is also bad when you have a dirty airfilter.

Make sure the brass seat for the inlet needle and seat has a asket under it, and is screwed TIGHT into the carburetor body. Use a WIDE screwdriver.

Make sure the seat has not been "burred" by a slip of the screwdriver, that is causing the needle to bind.

Be sure the float is not "heavy", and is not bent, causing it to bind against the float bowl.

I rebuild a lot of carbs, and I can't recall the last one that gave trouble with "running over".

IMHO, the guys that are always getting the "bad" seats are darned unlucky, careless when installing them or simply "blowing smoke". I simply haven't seen the rash of "bad seats" there are so many posts about.

I also rebuild a lot of carbs. I have been doing it for about 35 years now. I am very careful when disassembling, and use equal care when reassembling. I always take precautions to ensure that the carb is squeaky clean, and all adjustments are correct. It used to be that installing a new needle valve and seat would guarantee that the carb would not leak fuel, and I never used to have any problems. It just isn't that way anymore, and I know I am not alone in this matter. There are way too many people having trouble for you to be able to blame the problem on lack of skill.

InCase,
Did you replace the float when you rebuilt your carb? It sounds to me like your float is filling with fuel, which will make it flood within a few minutes of turning the fuel flow on. It could also be that your float level is adjusted too high. In any case (no pun intended), you're going to have to take her apart again to get her fixed. Good Luck and God Bless, Tommy

Most likely a faulty/defective needle valve and seat. You are not the first to experience these problems. The NAPA carb kit you purchased was a very good choice, and you should not have had any problems, but unfortunately those viton tipped needle valves just aren't as good as they used to be, and I don't know what the answer is to getting a good one. Go talk to your NAPA dealer, explain the problem to him, and see if he will give you another needle valve, or maybe some suggestions. Those needle valves are starting to be a real problem, I have had problems with kits from NAPA, Tisco, and Case-IH.
