Like others, I've got a pto mounted one. Works well, but spooky.

The tractor ones normally have a retainer bar to catch the wood.

The stickler (still made btw) does not have this bar, and is designed to be used on a truck or such in place of a wheel. You jack the truck up, pop off a wheel, mount the Stickler, and split wood. It leaves you with the distinct ability to have your truck take off down the road on three tires and a log.

Wouldn't the differential kick the power to the other side if you got a good piece of wood on there? Would a parking brake be enough to assure of this not happening?? Ohwell, I think I will stick to an ax and wedge :). Atleast I won't get screwed over on that setup (no pun inteneded) lol.

I had a friend about 20 years ago who was using one of those on back of the tractor. He caught his clothes on it and was pulled into it. It went into
his abdomen. He freed himself, ran across the road
to a neighbors house and died in his driveway. I was under the impression that this type of splitter has been outlawed. All I know is that they are a very dangerous piece of equipment. Stay away from it.

I read thru all the posts below before coming to the conclusion that THAT thing has to be the dumbest idea for splitting wood I'VE ever seen.
Darwinism at it's best on that car rim!! Now, if a guy really was stuck on the idea of the screw, I can think of several ways to use an old bush hog gear box and 3pt to make VERTICAL set-ups that would work fast, and SAFE. my .02 jim

Why vertical & a gearbox? I'm not real fond of involving the car rim either I musy say!

But, vertical??? Stumble & you will catch it for sure..... Have to lift all the wood & get your arm under the wood???? No thanks!!!!!

The pto model I have actually slopes downward. Direct drive, pto shaft. Run it at idle. There is a bar along the side. Stick the wood on the point, let go, and it works itself in, splits. As someone said, you do _not_ want short pieces of wood. If they don't catch the bar, then they will spin around just horridly.

I've rolled 30 inch across by 27 inch long wood up to mine, stalled the engine a few times, but generally worked well.

I've also seen the same type with a metal table, rather than a bar. They looked pretty safe too. Relatively.

Would think vertical would ve the worst - even if you ment pointing downward, then you have to lift allt he wood, or you have to lower, then raise the spinning point?

If I'm visualizing right, that sounds like a slick way to use that critter. My present log splitter can be used horizontal(too high off the ground) and vertical(just about right height). My reason for thinking the gearbox might help was for speed. I guess if a guy wasn't trying to make a living at producing split firewood, it wouldn't make that much difference. I have to take a good 'halfstep' back to reach my hydro/power lever on my splitter so there is ZERO chance of getting split myself unless I was using a helper. I think I'll just stick with what I am used to.

I once used one on the back of a friends Farmall A. It did have a bar that the log would spin and hit so it couldn't spin around. It worked pretty good as I remember. Common sense is important though as with any piece of equipment.

My Dad used tell about a splitter a neighbor used to have. He mounted a wedge on the piston of an old converted "hit and miss" engine. You had to time putting the block of wood in just at the right time.

I use one on the PTO of a Ford 8N. Trial and error and it works just fine. 8N doesn't have the juice to power through a block of sugar maple without near full throttle. Do NOT use with short wood. Wood spins round and round, a most grievous sight and horrendous sounds.

The most frightening splitter I ever saw was at Mount Pleasant IA. It had an axe head welded to a steel wheel (ground drive wheel off a binder I believe). The other end of the axle had a belt pully. It was belted to a tractor and some idiot got to throw the log under the turning wheel.

Bill I saw one of them in Farm Show on about an 8 ft. wheel on a belt pulley. A BIG old wedge was welded on one side and the whoole thing just kept spinning around. you had about 1.2 seconds to get rid of the split pieces and put another piece in place. Very unforgiving if you were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Can't see any way it could have been safe. Lefty.

Have a 3pt version, different company. Second fastest splitter I know of (if you think this is dangerous, you don't want to know about the fastest..... ;). You can make a _lot_ of firewood in a day.

Don't know that I like the mess & fuss of the car tire version, and like any tool it can be dangerous, but stick a piece of wood on, back up, & it's split. You do _not_ hold the wood!!!!!

I bought and used one of these many years ago. At the time I bought it, I paid somewhere between $100.00 and $200.00 for it which I thought was fairly inexpensive however when you add the price of the truck needed to power it, I guess it is a little more expensive than a regular log splitter. Once I learned how to use it properly, I was very satisfied with it. Split somewhere between 20 and 25 cords of wood and never had a problem. It handled everything I threw at it including pieces up to 24" in diameter. Haven't used it in years as I got tired of the work and dirt that burning wood brings with it. If you want any tips on what I found out about using it, e-mail me.

I recall seeing some of those used in the chariot race from the movie "Ben Hur". They seemed to work just fine there! Might be the answer for "road rage"...if you just would bolt them on to the wheel, and leave them on.☺☺☺

these are just like any other equipment .. if used the way it was mint to be if is just as safe as the hydraulic splitters and 3 times as fast i have used one for years and never had a problem. if used right you don't need to hold the log. screw goes in the side of the log and the log rests on the ground to keep from turning

My brother has had one for 25 years. You have to be VERY careful with it. The RPMS need to be kept LOW. It's a real hand grabber!

Nope I never did. By the time it would take to go find chock blocks, then go find the jack. Then stumble around in the barn to find a piece of rebar or something to use for a jack handle, then go get the neighbor to come and help jump start the pick up, then go get the cows back in (somebody left the gate open) then go get one of the kids to come and hold the flashlight, then go back inside( batteries dead in flashlight). I could split enough by hand to get by for a couple of days.

Many serious injuries have resulted because of those things. I was under the impression that they were taken off the market. If not, they should have been.

I not brave enough for that. You'd have to have King King hold the log, but then if I could have his services, he'd be better utilized on the splittng wedge. LOL
