Hi Guys and Gals,

Well I've been looking around and it's seams if you google the major tire mfg's they all have had some blowout problems. Then I ran into this website.

NHTSA is a gov't agency for reporting vehicle problems including tires.

Number of Complaints:

Cooper=142
Dunlop=206
Michelin=719
Goodyear=1296
Firestone=5268

Seams like our local news fibs alot as it appears Cooper has a pretty good track record comparred to the others.

Back in the late fifties, my wife and i were short of money, but, since i needed snow tires for the car, to get to work, she ordered snow tires from one of the department stores in Pittsburgh. So, the day they were delivered, i walked in the door and saw the snow tires setting there! Well, i inspected the tires, and when i saw the name on them, i thought to my self:" Uh,oh, we've been had!" The name on them was Abel Tire Co. I had never heard of them, but, not wanting to hurt her feelings, i said nothing! I took the tires and car to work, mounted the tires, and went home that evening. Next morning, there was 6 inches of snow on the roads, and since Pennsylvania at that time had 4 snow-plow trucks for all of western Pa., i had a chance to try out the tires. To my surprise, those tires worked better than any of the higher priced tires i had used before, and lasted much longer, too! And, we still kid each other about the "Abel Mabel Label Tires"!

Thanks for the update. I have been following this and the original post but haven't said anything until now. I live in Texas and have replaced my tires (1/2 ton trucks) since 1970 with Cooper each time I could when the factory tires wore out. I have had nothing but good luck with them and no one I know has ever had a problem with them. That being said, I can say the same thing about any other brand of tire I have used. Every once in a while one line of one brand of tire won't hold up as well as another brand or even another line of the same brand. That happens with other products as well. I will keep using Cooper tires on my trucks becouse of the tire life and the lower cost. If they or any other product is found to be of low quality and dangerous I will switch. However if a TV station reports false or misleading information I will switch stations and let them know why. Freedom of speech is not freedom to lie or mislead.

Those numbers mean nothing without production figures to go with them. Example, Cooper with 142 complaints may have only produced say 1000 tires making for a 14.2 percent complaint rate while goodyear with a seemingly huge amount of complaints at 1296 having sold 100,000 tires has really had much less complaints with oney a 1.296% complaint rate. Keep in mind these numbers are off the top of my head because I don't have production numbers to go with the complaint numbers you listed.

That Firestone Tire problem with Explorers was blowed way out of proportion too. My cousin had a set on his Explorer and had real good service out of them. This was up in Ohio where the heat isn't as bad. Most of those recalled Firestones are back on the road too ! Dealers just tossed them into the pile with the rest of the old tires. The ones with good tread got scarfed up by the dumpster divers.

Dealers here didn't put them back on the road!!! Holes were drilled into the sidewalls. I them doing it myself.

Welllll ll, they were supposed to destroy the Firestones, but a recycler here was charged with reselling them to trailer manufacturers to put on trailers. He got some jail time for it, so I hear. He'd have employees visually inspect incoming tires, and if they looked OK, they'd go into a semi trailer for shipment. Now, bear in mind that these were the tires he got from reatil dealers, and they keep the best takeoffs for resale. So they had already been picked over and rejected once, and now they were going to have them on trailers? Are you scared? You should be!

There are none of the recalled Firestones back on the road from the dealers around here. All the tires I saw removed had a chunk cut out of the sidewall. Was told that was how they got reimbursed for the new tires was they had to have the tire brand to show for reimbursment. So unless the dealer wanted to pay the cost of the new tires, the old ones were destroyed.

Those numbers mean nothing by themselves. They are affected by sales volume and news hype.

Remember the colateral damage the "Jump out of park" did to Audi?

Those figures are prety much meaningless without dividing them into sales figures for each brand.

T-Bone,

Thanks for the update. However, I don't think Cooper sells nearly as many tires as the other manufacturers listed, except maybe Dunlop.

It sure puts the finger on Firestone, though.

Various manufacturers. Most of the car tires I've bought from Les Schwab have been made by TOYO, and have provided excellent service.

 who makes this brand? in reply to wayne2, 11-07-2005 05:16:29
Wayne,
Cooper is the manufacturer. I have been using MasterCraft, made by Cooper, for years, and I have had great service from them. The price and quality are very good. I suppose they aren't readily available everywhere, but if you can get Cooper tires, you'll probably like them.
Good Luck and God Bless, Tommy
