just wondering if there is any reason not to mix different types of hydraulic oils such as R&O(rust and oxidizer) mixed with EP(extreme pressure) or AW(anti-wear) hydraulic oils. i was told by a friend that it was not a good idea, but he had no solid reason for it. the dimbulbs at NAPA said that R&O is all they can get now and that seems a bit farfetched. i have EP Super-Trac in my tractors now and am getting a little concerned about possible contamination from different fluids.

The oil isnt the problem, the problem is the diferent additives used by the diferent companies reacting with one another.

Don't know about those oils, but I did mix hydraulic oil from Sam's with oil from TSC and the oil foamed under load in the tractor. Drained oil and used one brand, no more foaming. I use the Sam's, another guy uses TSC, neither of us has problems as long as we don't mix them.

It"s going to depend on your tractor. If it is some old P.O.S. that chatters and leaks, and doesn"t have wet brakes,or hydraulic clutches use what ever you want. If it is a decent tractor and you want to take care of it use a good quality universal tractor fluid, not a hodgepodge mix of whatever you can get. And no those oils don"t mix.

alot has to do with the additives that differ from one company to another, though the oil weight might be the same different brands and manufactures add there own mixture of additives to help the fluid do its job, i.e. lubrication/high preasure use etc. these additives vary from manufacture to manufacture, this quite possible could have led to the foaming that you experienced, it was most likely caused by a chemical reaction by something in the additives...in the for what its worth colum....
