Triticale, as Bob says is a hybrid F1 cross of wheat and rye. Excellent nutritional value (like wheat), excellent yields (like rye) plus earlier maturity and phenominal silage yields. Also excellent winter grazing as it is more cold tolerant than wheat.

I put out 10 acres 3 years ago, 40 last year, and 150 this year. All for round bale silage. Cost is about 3x cost of cover crop wheat this year, 2x for certified seed wheat. Last year mine made 29 4x4 rolls per acre of 50% moisture silage as opposed to 15 rolls of wheat at similar moisture.

So sorry about the poor spelling. We have many dairy farms here and each has to have manure management plan for each acre and no. of cows waste applied to each acre. They started using this cover crop about 6 years ago where they are chopping off the corn silage and wish to apply liquid manure in the fall up until Nov.1. They actually plant this crop as they cultivate in June or July and thus the crop is up and growing when the cut the silage off. Kinda strange to see all the co-ops running around with little planting devices on the cultivators. Works pretty well though and surely is helping keep the soil in balance and in place. We are just now experimenting with organic cover crops such as wheat and this to feed the few all organic dairies and chicken farms that are starting to pop up. Thus my BIL is getting his F gleaner combine for the increased acreage he hopes for next season. Man I sure do miss farmng after all the years I was involved. But the risk is so high and I'd like to try to keep at least some of what I've earned this far. Later Migraine

Well, triticale is either a wheat/rye cross, or food for Tribbles on Star Trek, depending on what genre you're referring to!

Specifically, the Tribbles were eating quadro-triticale. Apparently quadro-triticale and quinto-triticale were the results of centuries of triticale farming.

Fred,

Some heighbors here in Towner County raised it in the 70's, and found there was no market for it. I know one guy who still has some rotting away in an old wooded granary. Did any of you Rolette County guys raise it, and if so, what was done with it... silage, grain for own feed, or grain for cash sale?
