I have a tractor that is proving almost impossible to adapt a 3 pt. hitch to ("53 JD Model R) but I would like to use a mounted drum mower and mounted tedder with it.

A friend of mine says he saw a photo in a magazine of a trailer mounted 3 pt. hitch being towed by a tractor that lacked 3 pt. hitch.

Anybody ever seen anything like this before?

bob

I know they are made for big imlements like chisel plows so there should be carriers that are lighter for mowers etc. Putting a PTO powered implement on it is a little more involved but not much. Maybe some of the companies that make mowers like Bush Hog would offer a lighter 3 PT carrier or maybe a welding shop could make one for you. Jim

Hi Bob,

I bought a IH706 without a 3pt, I have one for it off another tractor but I don't want to take the time to mount it right now, very involved to install it.

So I bought a Cat2 draw bar, $40 delivered new, and I'm going to bolt that to my tractor draw bar to be used as the lower piviots, then make a couple swing arms couplers for the lower 3pt connection then add a hyd cyl for the upper lifting arm. For less than a $100 in parts it's a cheap easy way of making a workable 3pt.

When I get the real fast hitch attached then I will use the hyd cyl for a grapple cyl on my front loader and the draw bar for something else.

Something you might consider until you can find the correct parts for yours.

Swisher makes a setup like you describe for atv's. The cart has a 1500 lb winch that acts as the third link and the implement pivots on the two side pins. If you are located in the IL area my fabrication shop could make you one to your specs.

I think I know what he is talking about. They are an offset cart with a hyd. cyl. and a 3pt lift arms and top link. It is mainly designed for use with discmowers where the tractor has the power, just not the weight for the mower to be mounted to the tractor. It also has a long PTO extension too. The link is to an info page on a brand that makes one. Hope this is what you are looking for.

Whattya bet the caddy costs more than a good used 3 point tractor capable of handling the implements?

I'm sure thay are out there..that doesn't help much does it?? haha Actually seen similiar on RFD awhile back,it was an Amish deal,a 2 wheeled 3pt setup that they pulled with a 4 or 6 up hitch of drafts..don't see why ya couldn't substitute the drafts for a drawbar though..
I just don't remember who was building them..
sorry,
Tim

Thanx for the info and the links. I know what you mean about the fancy rigs costing more than the price of a good used tractor with 3 pt. hitch. Can't let a little thing like money slow us down though....hahaha.

www.ccmachinery.com has the caddys for $2200. Advantages: you can hook up the mower with one pin and hydraulic hose. You can make square corners with it. As was said above, you can use a smaller tractor. Disadvantage: cost, another piece of machinery to buy. The type I recently looked at had the 3 point linkage set permantly in one of three sets of holes, hydraulics raised and lowered the disc mower blade. Dont think that type would work with a drum mower as it is raised only by 3ph and the drums are manually swung aroung to transport position. The one in the link shown above is not like the ones I saw and may be what you want. Good luck.
