Recommended paint for battery tray?

Howdy, y'all.
I'm working at putting a Feruson TO-30 back to work, and one of the problems I've found is corrosion on the battery tray and brackets. Looks like it has gotten some acid on it, so it has a pretty thick layer of salts and rust. What should I do to better preserve that tray? I'm not restoring this tractor, just rebuilding it as a working tractor. Is there anything I can use to seal that tray without doing a lot of work to clean it up? I'd like to pull it out and wire brush it, but I'm honestly not sure I can get it out without destroying it.

Thanks in advance,
Darren

You might not like this idea for a restored tractor but it works. On my truck I have coated the battery holder with grease. Works for years. When the grease gets old and dry I squirt oil on it to "refresh" it. Haven't had any battery shelf problems.

Check around, there are primers that chemically neutralize rust. You have to clean off all the loose stuff, but no need to get down to clean, bare metal.

Wire brushes are OK for small spots of rust, but blasting works much better & faster.

Also, if you blast it, sand removes rust better and much faster than beads. OTOH, beads remove paint faster.

Might want to look into powder coating. It puts a very tough layer of plastic over the surface & looks like paint. A good powder coating job is hard to scratch. That way you won't get scratches thru the paint that let rust get started again.

After you get it clean, go to your local Auto paint supply store and get a spray can of rock and chip guard. Spray tray real good, even do a couple of coats. Rock and chip guard comes in clear and black...HTH

This is pretty common on all antique tractors. If you want to really save it, you will need to pull it out and clean it up. What I do on my 8Ns is to bead blast (or wire wheel) it down to clean bare metal. You may need to weld up any rust through areas or parts that are seriously corroded before you paint. Spray some phosphoric acid on the bare metal and let it sit overnight - this will completely kill and convert any rust sitting in the pitted areas. After it dries, lightly sand the surface with 150 grit sandpaper, primer it with Rustoleum Aut Primer in the spray cans, then paint it the color and paint of your choice.

As a precaution on my 1948 8N show queen, after I cleaned the tray up and painted it, I found a battery mat at Harbor Freight that you place under your battery. If it leaks acid, this special mat soaks it up and holds it away from the metal.

Good luck,
Dan
