i was on harrys old engine page tonight and read the results of the hedtke auction. when it was announced i talked to the auctioneer and asked him why they were having a auction. he told me to get rid of duplicate stuff that the museum had. i know they had the only case 150hp boiler left in the world.and i know some of the other tractors they sold they only had one of. what is the reason for the sale?it doesnt make sense to me to sell this stuff if you have a museum.just kinda wonder.

The people I talked to there, said that the auction was held to help pay taxes, get rid of the stuff. It"s a shame to se it hapen if thats the truth. He had a nice collection, but it hadn"t been taken care of the past few years. It was my understanding that the stored items had 2-3" of coon and possum poo on them. Judging from the smell at the grounds I"d believe it. The worst pat of the whole auction was that a few items (the Avery and the Aultman Taylor 30-60) were going to go overseas.

Out of view from the public, most museums have a warehouse full of items. A lot of museums are given items from people in their wills or from families that have lost someone. They feel that the old whatever it is, will be safe with the museum curator when in fact it becomes a storage problem. Some of the larger museums will have sales of "surplus" items every once in a while. Usually they keep the best of what there are two of and sell the rest. It gives them more operating money and keeps their storage space open for items that they may be trying to get hold of. At todays cost of floor space they just cant afford to store a lot of extra items. The money acquired from the sales will sometimes benefit upgrading their exhibits also.

I am a step-niece of George Hedtke. As you know, my uncle died last February 2005. His trustee has sold all of the assets including the stam engines. I believe the only thing left is the 45 acres of land known as The Hickory oaks Farm. I don't believe it is for sale yet, but not sure. There will be no museum like George once wanted. I'm not privy to all the details but the trustee lives out of state and has his own work and family to attend to. I have some publications and articles about my uncle and his shows that I will be placing on ebay real soon. If you are interested, let me know.
