talking about white 4-180,s,
a guy told me that the front bearing in 3208 Cat V8,s needed to be changed every 2500 hrs,
Or it would get hot, and fail,
This sound,s a little fishy to me,
I thought that the Cat V8,s were pretty robust,
and didnt have a history of little problem,s
Like that,
If that,s the case,than do Perkin,s V8,s
have the same problem?
I wanna get a Massey 2775, but if it,s going to do this on me,
than Ill forget it,and go with another brand.
Please get back to me on this ok,
thank,s alot,
Kirk c,

the 3208 is not in the same ball park with the 540 or 640 perkins. the 3208 most did't last 2500 hr. they are a throw a way engine and yes it helps to change bearings even on the perkins most big D engines recomend it

Boy, all three of my throw away V8 Cat's have lasted well over that 2500 hr mark. One in a truck with 350k never touched, one in a MF 1800 with 4800 hrs never opened up, and one in a NH TR95 with 3500 hrs still fires up when it is well below freezing and runs like a champ and of course not had the pan off or heads off or anything.

While the 3208 certainly WASN'T the best tractor engine ever made, it is FAR from a "throw-away engine". While it is true they are not sleeved, they can be rebored, and, when necessary, sleeved back to standard.

Really didn't see any main bearing problems on the 3208. Rod bearing cavitation erosion was another matter. These engines did not like too things, constant lugging and constant high rpm operation. Keep high idle below 2850 rpm (2600 is even better) and don't lug the engine below 1900-2000 rpm, and it will last a long time. If you want to lug the engine and run high speeds, plan on changing the bearings every 3000 hrs.

Have a engineer friend who worked at MF for many years and field tested the Perkins V8 tractors. He wouldn't have one. The 24 speed transmission could be a disaster. If it was built within specified tolerances it worked just fine. If it wasn't, and most were not because the tolerances were very exact, it would eventually fail. Unfortunately, it was a good chance the rebuild was not going to be within tolerances, and the failure would repeat. He didn't really like the V8 either. The inline pump was a significant improvement, but he mentioned other problems which led me to look else where for a higher HP tractor.

Hi Jame,s 2,
Iwas just looking at your letter on the 3208
Cat,& the Perkin,s V8,s too,
I was looking at a 2775 at a dealer,It ran ok, and didnt smoke, drove ok too,was put back to an
8 spd Tranny,I guess for safety sake,had 4,711 hrs on clock,79 .
I was all enthralled at the sound of one james,
But never owned one for an amount of time,It,s weird that perkin,s would put that close of tolerances in that engine, you would think that
being a farm Tractor engine , they would loosen them up a little bit,but I guess not.
Anyway, thanks alot for responding so quick,
It Pay,s to be watchful on these thing,s!
I appreciate it alot,
take it easy ok Kirk conway

Maybe we should start collecting V8 tractors. There won't be many of them left after a few years.Jim
