rice vs radial tires

I just bought a Massey 1130 it has 20.8x38 bias tires that have less then 50% tread. I'd like to put new rice and cane tires on it like the rest of my tractors, but sticker shock has brought me to consider radial tires. Will they tear up my fields like bias tires do? I like to get started early in the spring with tillage and chopping grass, the rice tires seem to be less destructive in the heavy clay on my farm and I can't really wait till July for everything to dry out.

Take it from a retired rice farmer, if you want traction, go with rice & cane, if you want a smoother ride go with radials! NO comparison in the mud!!

do not know what rice tires are but radials offer bigger footprint than bias ply.

A wore out rice tire will have as much tread left as a new set of regular tires, the tread is twice as deep when new and bars connected together for strength, and they are wider spaced on the lugs and designed to shed mud as they are for use in muddy conditions. Not used here in Ohio.

Out here on the hillsides of western NY the clay is heavy and wet. Both of my neigbors on the otherside of the hill use IH power with live fronts and rice and cane all the way around. When I put used rice tires on my 730 and 3020 I spent less then a grand afor each tractor. When I put new rice tires on my 830 I spent around 1500. My 4020 came with rice ties on it and have lasted well. all I could find in used tires for the Massey were $1100 a piece, new would be $1700 a piece. Compared to radial would be $800 a piece. Big difference in price, but after reading comments here and talking with others I think I'll spring for new ricers. Thanks

Check salvage yards , up here in cent IL rice tires sit and rot unless you need a set for a bine .
