So,

I stop by the county seat with my little envelope in hand to get tags and license for this old tractor-hauling trailer. (I thought it was quite an accomplishment in itself, just roundin' up all the scrambled paperwork that was needed for the process).

Anyway, the county treasurer says that I physically have to have the trailer at the courthouse because it originally came down out of South Dakota and that the sheriff needs to inspect it (charging me an extra $10 I might add) prior to their issuing tags.

Obviously, the woman just does not understand that the trailer is parked 'bout a kazillion miles away out at the farm; it is so far out in the country that ya can't get there from here and I don't wanna waste the fuel to drag it clear back into town anyways. Additionally, I'm somewhat of an anti-social type and think this "$10 Inspection" is more than just a bit silly.

Therefore, I ask her if she thought perhaps I could just slip the sheriff a couple of extra bucks and we could by-pass this goofy little inspection routine altogether.

She mentioned something about "Sure, and he'll probably even buy your meals for the next 10 days".

Wonder what the heck she meant by that? :>)

Anybody know what the fine is for draggin' around a trailer without tags on it? :>)

Ya'll have a good day now,

Allan

Allan - I never have any problems here in the SE corner! Brought a trailer over from Missouri last year (18' flat bed - wish I would a kept it), told the courthouse what I had and what I wanted - she just printed it out and charged me $18 (wasn't a new trailer). I've licensed 3 trailers in the past year, 2 from out-o-state, with no problems. Only thing I don't like is them stupid full-size plates we now have. I guess I'm not understanding the "tax everything you breathe", either! I don't pay any tax (sales or property) on any of the equipment I have ('course it ain't NEW either!), and even have two old pickups that aren't tagged (they don't leave the farm). Our county tax rate is 5.5% (in town it's 7% because of the stupid prison). My property tax on the 101 acres (2000 sqft house, 30x16 shop, outhouse, 30x15 quonset, 15x30 shed, 10x12 shed) will be $1050 next year. Seen a LOT worse conditions in other states!

Why not put a Maine tag on it.5 year tag,not hatefull in price.I have 6 trailers tagged that way,2 goosenecks,3 hoppers, and a dropdeck. Most of the big trucking companies use Maine tags..Everything can be done by mail, once you call them to get the application.

In NY state there is a specific law to allow you to take an un-registered trailer to a station to be weighed so it can be registerd. Check and see if your state has a similar exception. The State Police would be my first call. We have all sorts of problems with Dept of Motor Vehicles clerks telling folks they can do any number of things that are clearly illegal.

Here in CA bought an untitled tamden hauler. Had to take it to the DMV so they could check the serial #. 5 year tags are now $35. They used to charge you by weight. My small 5X8 used cost $35 per year by itself. I"d hate to think what my new toy would have cost before they went to 5 year tags.

Darn it Allan, by your post title I thought I would get some experience about women. Then I read it and find its about trailers. I thought about sending my woman to charm school as she runs around the house fartin then giggles about it; course it don't stink but charm school would be better.

Here in Crane County Texas any farm trailer less than 37,000 GVW is $5.30. I was ready to do the hoop dance when I bought the used double axle stock trailer and the owner kept the plates. Nay,nay said the nice tax ladies."$5.30 please and here are your plates". I owe them some flowers.....

BTW, if your over 65 your tax bill in the county is "0". They figure you've payed enough. Guess why I like it here!,hehehehehehehe.

About 2 years ago I bought an 18' car hauler trailer at an auction. Auctioneer handed me an envelope with the paperwork. Inside I found a manufactures statement of origin (MSO) which is what the factory sends the dealer. When it gets purchased retail, it's supposed to be converted to registration/tags/title. Well this trailer was built in 1997 and had been owned by a construction company, but never registered or titled. So I figured "why should I?"

I manage a small credit union and had to use my trailer to go do a repo one day. I took another guy with me to help. He's an off-duty cop. I happen to mention to him that I still needed to get the trailer licensed. He asked me if it has working lights. I said yes and he said there's no need to get it licensed. I'm assuming he's up to date on the applicable laws here on that subject so it still has no tags.

Hey Jim,
When I lived in Utah the deal was, any trailer under 1,000# didn't require a title or license... anything OVER 1,000# required BOTH. Things may have changed in the 11 years I've been away, you probably oughtta check it out! My guess is that it'd be cheaper to just buy the registration than to pay the fine & then the registration! Here's what 'ya do, buddy....call Sherriff Carl, tell him you need him to come to the ranch to investigate "suspicious activity" you suspect has been happening at the ranch. Tell him to bring some donuts along cuz it may take a while. When he gets there, rustle some leaves around, do some looking around, and ask him by the way could he look at this trailer before he leaves. Have some coffee and donuts before he goes, and everbody's happy!

A few years ago I was swapping plates between trailers. I was hauling a tractor on my equipment trailer one day when I realized my plate was on the other trailer. As I was sitting at a stop sign waiting to cross the intersection the sheriff pulled up behind me. I thought I would get a ticket for sure. When traffic clesred I went thru and he turned right. Didn't seem to notice.

Hey Pard,
I recently went through the same thing with a trailer I purchased for the big rig... the lil' gal told me I had to bring the trailer down to the court house so's someone could come out & gander at that lil ol tag. I mumbled something about parking a rig nearly 70 feet long and it finally hit her, what I was talkin about. She then told me I could call the friendly local Sheriff's Deputy who would come out to my place for no charge (course I still hadta pay fer him to gander at that little tag... talk aboutcher racket!!!) Anyways, that's the way it works on this sidda the state line... might give them fellers a call... might save yer gas haulin that trailer around. Ya might want to have a few donuts around fer when the law shows up... helps keep 'em in good humor don'tchaknow???
Happy Trails, DL

LOL I went through that when I bought a stock trailer in SD. Why I dont know but I compaired the title with the vin on the trailer, it didnt match, I called the dude (dealer) I bought the trailer from and he put on another VIN plate. I got it inspected with no problems. That was 10 years ago.

The inspection has been in affect for years when you purchase an out of state item that needs a license. And the meal deal is you'd be in JAIL, for bribing the sheriff. Question, you'll be dragging that trailer around the country anyway so what's the problem with dragging it back to town, take a different route and you might find something to take home.

We used to have the same foolishness in Washington- except it was the State Patrol that had to inspect it. A few years ago, in a rare display of bureaucrat retrogression, they actually did away with the inspection requirement! I think it was costing them too much to staff the offices with an inspector, after they went to central dispatch, and the inspector had nothing else to do.

Yeah but did you notice they still charge you for the inspection of an out-of -state vehicle even though they don't inspect them anymore?? What a crock! I moved here 5 years ago and each trailer was $6.50 for plates.....the next year they were all $33, adds up when you have 6 of them! Now I'm down to 3.

Shoot here in Missouri I have brought cars/trucks/trailors and drove them home with out tags and have never got stopped. And if you do get stopped you just show them the paper work and tell them your takeing it home or to have it inspected and they say ok or give you a no cost ticket as long as you get the plate within 30 days.

Here in Colorado, if from out of state, the high way patrol will come by and inspect an sign needed paper. If home made, you get a form and higway patrol comes and stampes a number on it for you.

Trailer tags you say?

Here in this part of Montana if you have all your trailer lights working and a current tag on it they are going to put a drug sniffing dog on it because for sure you are up to something.

EACH STATE IS DIFFERENT FOR SURE, HERE IN MN. WE GET A LICENSE FOR A TRAILER FOR A LIFE TIME, WHICH IS SURE STUPED IN MY OPINION, AND, IT'S AGAINST THE LAW TO LOAN ANY TRAILER TO ANY ONE, SO I GUESS IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE RULES, JUST TELL YOUR GOVERNMENT IN WRITING AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS....LOL..... .

Wow they must be rough out in your country.

I have a couple of old PU boxes and Manure spreaders that I use for hauling scrap. Added lights to all of them but no brakes. (Yeah I know I have railed against this). Got to thinking one day I should get tags. Went to the county seat and they asked whether I made the trailer. I told them I made it out of a old tird hearse and they called it a remanufactured trailer and extracted $12 from me and handed me tags. Don't tell them that I move the tags from trailer to trailer.

As for run ins with the DOT ask fixerupper. He has a LOT of experience with this Some in your territory also I think.

Hope your wife is getting along well. At first I thought this post was about her and that she got another Oat Burner;<)

Your Wife should buy a nice gentle paint horse, and go on the APHA annual trail ride that they have each fall at Fort Robinson. My Wife goes down there, and really enjoys it. From what I hear and see from photos, the facilities are a joy to behold.
As far as your trailer...maybe you will have to buy a cheap house up in Oelrichs, and claim citizenship in order to keep your SD plates.

Well you could put it on another trailer and trailer it there (R_PITA)

But try this one.....

In Ohio, you have to have insurance to get a drivers license, otherwise you get a state ID. Must sign a paper saying so under pent. of purgery. Not wanting to go to jail, you go to the insurance co and they require a valid license to get insurance.

Who do you lie to????
(Hint) Insurance co verify your license, BMV doesn't verify insurance..... ....

In 1958 I assembled a motorcycle from several donor bikes and then had to title and license it. The sheriffs fee was $6 back then so thank goodness they haven't caught on to inflation yet Allan.

The sheriff glanced at it and signed the paperwork. There is no way he had the proper training or credentials to do a proper inspection.

He,he,

Ol' Sheriff Carl here is the coolest dude ever. When I moved back down here from North Dakota he had to inspect my old brown pickup.

He asked me if anyone was hurt in that wreck. :>)

The good ones have a sense of humor. I give "a lot" of kids rides, take photos of accidents hunted a couple of times for missing persons and get to wait in the short line for most local gov. related issues. My little trailer licence seems to bolt on to many different frames easy enough regardless..
Have you looked out side yet? My gawd what a beautiful morning! I would expect even better out your way with out telephone poles or an interstate close by. As far as being antisocial.. I wish I could be that way more than my job allows.

Come on now, Allan. Rules is rules. How can you expect the sherriff to makes ends meet if you don't help?

Colorado's nicer, the sheriff does the inspection for free. If ya build a trailer you tell them how big and they gice you a nice serial plate sticker with a number, no inspection.

BTW, saved you from buying another horese. I'm down in Salina picking up a Thoroughbred mare. 6 year old, off the track a year ago, and pregnant. Only $450.

Is the missus ready to buy a foal in March?

Hi Ya Tim,

Yep, that's the only thing I don't like 'bout Nebraska. They tax ya on every breath of air ya take.

Now, I see that they are adding a "tire tax" on the registration fees. Probably have to offset Sheriff Carl's meal expenses. :>)

This site has to be the best form of free entertainment left. You guys crack me up and I can certainly use that to help make the day. Heck if you guys want to experience true gov't at work you need to get over here on the western lip of the range. Shoot we pay a fee for everything. I have 7 trailers and they all must carry tabs, insurance and yes the hefty 8.6 percent sales tax , plus the inspection and tire minimum and hitch rating, and load ratings, and don't get caught having debris come off your rig, even leaves or you will get to join the boys in the barred motel for a stint. Course there is the free meals and T.V so...I think we even have a chart in the bathroom to monitor our contribution to the system so we must be paying by the pound there too. Migraine

Move to Ky. We don't need any plates if you have farm tags on the truck. I have several trailers and no tags on any of them.

Allan

Had my car liscense plate ripped off the car. Reported it to local police chief. 2 hours later the border patrol caught it on a truck hauling illegals across the border. Took about 8-10 days for the chief to mail me the license plate. Never got stopped for no plate.

Hey buddy, like a lot of others have said, I have 4 trailers of all kinds and descriptions, and one tag. They don"t care what the tag is as long as you have one. Insurance is on the power vehicle, so no hits, no runs, and no errors. Harley

In NY they give you your tag and a ten day sticker to cover while you get your inspection. My ten day sticker is about 17 years old. As long as you"ve got working lites they are never gonna pull you over. I"ve even gone through safety check roadblocks and they never have questioned the trailer.
