I agree with Buick's idea. I had the same problem with my 70 Diesel, and sure enough, one of the thrust washers was half chewed up. I can't help you more than that, as I've never worked on a G.

Your slinger may be stuck not letting the flywheel go on back farther.

Somebody may have snapped the little tang off that turns the thrust washer. A common occurance by tinkerers. The thrust washer will then eventually shred it's self. When the G was last apart, the tinkerer maynot have forced the pulley/crank all the way towards the flywheel side. The thrust washer may have fallen down when the seal cover was bolted on. Then it was pinched, crushed and shredded when the engine was rotated. The engine may have even been thrown together on the cheap with some home made substitute internal spacers made of leather, metal shims, baler twine etc. About all you can do is tear it down. Odds are it needs some other internal work as well.

Whatever takes the crankshaft thrust is worn. Either a thrust washer or a thrust face on one of the main bearings. Not familiar with your specific engine but that is usually the problem.
