Ok,heres the story..Been looking for a deal on a 12volt hydraulic pump for a tilt trailer,,came on a deal too good to pass up (free) on a 24 volt pump..whats the effects on running this on 12volts?? lowered performance or is it gonna hurt it.. it has 2 pos. cables coming out of the motor,do I hook'em together on a 12volt batt,or do i run it off of one cable since I'm on 12 volts..sorry for stupid questions, but this stuff is foreign to me..
thanks,
Tim the electrically challenged..

Under 12 volts, it will only turn half as fast under no load as it will on 24 volts.

An ideal calculation has a 24V load making 1/4 of it's nameplate power when supplied with 12V. The motor can be loaded down to rated nameplate current while still running at rated rpms. The motor will make barely 1/2 of it's nameplate HP.

hook it up right by using 2 12 volt batteries, I think you will burn it up on just 12 volt!

Do you mean running the motor on 12V or 24V? It's over current lets the smoke out of electrical wiring.

It's a 24v motor, but I was wanting to run it on 12v. I called my local rebuilder hero this morning,I can get the motor converted to 12v. cheaper than i can buy a 2nd battery to run it on 24v. It's only gonna be used occasionally to power the tilt cylinder on a car hauler trailer,so I really don't want to have 2 batteries dedicated to this.
thanks,
Tim

That is the way to go Tim. DC Electric motors love Voltage. Low Voltage will burn them out under load. A motor is basicly a Short Circiut when static/not turning. As it starts turning and picking up speed it generated an internal voltage to resist the battery voltage and the amp go down to working rate. Low Voltage means Low Speed and Low Resistance to Bat Voltage. High Amps and lots of Heat.
